Is the 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro 15 inch that much better than the 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro 15 inch? In terms of speed, graphics, etc

For MOST users, no. For some, yes.

Depends entirely on what you do with it. Since you gave no indication of your use, we can't begin to say. Not to be rude, but if you're asking the question, the answer is almost certainly no--just get the base one.

Remember that "worth" is a relative concept.

What if you are going to be running software for architecture (i.e. autocad, PS, etc.)?

Now that the low end 15" has 512mb of VRAM I was thinking of dropping down, also thinking of getting the early 2011 high end refurb (which is the same price with 1GB VRAM)

But I'm still oh so tempted to fork the extra $400 for the new high end...in March I was sure the high end 15" was the better value but now I can't choose between the three!
