I have a 4K 120Hz monitor connected over a thunderbolt to display port adapter that is confirmed in system info but I am only able to do 1440p at 120Hz in low DPI mode. It should be possible to do this even at DP 1.3 as I do on my gaming PC. Is this just not possible on the Mac at this time?

Curious what temps / fans rpm's you're experiencing at 144hz..at idle? Because there's a theory going around that the excessive heat / fans, even at idle, being experienced by many 16" MBP users when connected to an external monitor is related to 60hz refresh rate. Thanks.
Was around normal 4K 60Hz which is um hot lol. Around 60 or so. I keep forgetting to see if the laptop will do 4K 120Hz in Windows.
As shown above, it can do 4K 120Hz + HDR under Windows with exactly 0 issue. This is 100% an issue with Mac OS which I would like so help dealing with.
hey, did you ever figure how to get 4K 120hz working on your mbp 16? I just got a 4k 120hz display and would like to be able to use the screen's full potential on Mac instead of just on windows. I'm running a TB3 cable directly to the monitor.
