hihi!

i do video editing for youtube mainly, on fcpx, about 3-4 days a week. average editor not a heavy duty professional one.

is the amd radeon pro 5300 graphics card enough or should i upgrade to 5500 (8gb)? i saw a tech youtuber recommending maxing that out, but i would like to get more opinions.

thank you!

It's 5300m vs. 5500m (not 3300/3500). Yes, the answer is very simple: if u are doing any type of video rendering (FCPX etc) then its a no-brainer to move up to the 5500m with 8GB. You will cut down render times by 1/2.

You definitely won’t cut rendering times by 1/2 by choosing 5500M(8GB) over 5300M(4GB). Just because 5500M has double the ram doesn’t mean you will render your videos twice as fast. It doesn’t work that way.

@OP, you would be ok with the base model configuration for your needs imo. As you said you are not doing very heavy editing. But of course the 5500M would be more future proof.

thank you! yea it's a hard deliberation. to future proof or not.
i figured i'm gonna use it for 4-5 years at least, so i upgraded the graphics card, which will work out to about $40 per year. cut down a cup of coffee per month!
