You just gotta love soldered ssds!

Don't think if it was non soldered you'd have got the data back because the T2 chip would have encrypted the drive.

OP learnt their lesson the hardware, you need to make backups and not just on Mac's, you should do this on Windows / Linux and any even your phone where you no doubt have lots of important family pictures.

Since when? Be specific.
Since at least Mojave so before the subject of this post, the 16" MacBook Pro. I don't know about Pre Mojave since at that time I didn't have a Mac. I know it wasn't the case with Snow Leopard so after that.

@MrGimper the "issue" with the soldered SSD's is that if it fails outside of warranty you're stuck buying a new laptop, unless you want to pay an outrageous price to fix a machine that is 3+ years old (because, let's face it, it would be silly to buy one of these without the 3-year AppleCare plan).

Of course - the other "issue" is that if another component on the logic board fails while under warranty you also lose your data as the storage is built in.

It's not that people are saying 2.5" SSDs don't fail, it's that the risk of data loss is higher when the SSD is integrated with other components that could fail.

This is really the point. Never mind the data. If your SSD goes bad then get ready for a new computer or expensive repair.
