Yes, you can replace the HDD with a SATA 3 SSD. I have a Samsung 830 256GB drive in my early 2006 MBP and it works fine. Link speed is only 1.5 Gb/s on your machine if I'm not mistaken, but the speed difference will be very noticeable.

You're going to be limited to around 130MB/s. The good news is that you'll have a great SSD to move from your old MBP to your new one when you upgrade(as long as what you buy doesn't already have one).

As I see, my MBP starts faster than before. 😀
Maybe I will buy new 13'' one, once this old can't be fix anymore
