I own a late 2011 15" MacBook pro and haven't been able to boot it for 2 days. It was updated to Yosemite on launch day and worked perfectly for the day that followed.
The problem started when I shut the computer down because i couldn't get a program to load properly. When I tried to restart it, the apple logo and the progress bar appear, but when the bar gets halfway, the screen goes white and shortly after it powers itself off. Sometimes it will restart itself and sometimes it will not.
I have tried booting in safe mode but the same thing happens, the only difference is that it stays on the White screen and doesn't shut down. I also tried booting from a clone of the hd but it resulted in the same situation.
An important detail is that my computer has experienced the graphics card issues which have been going around. However I do not know if it is the cause of this or not. When ever it crashes due to the graphics card it usually has graphical glitches on the screen.
The next thing I was going to try was a clean install but I really wanted to try and avoid that.

Any help will be appreciated, cheers

That's what I feared. Can't enter recovery mode either so I'm not able to reinstall OS X. I just get the same result as when I tried to boot in safe mode. Taking it to the Apple Store next Saturday so I will have to see if they will help me.
If anyone knows anyway to get it functional again would greatly appreciate it. I'm stuff with my phone until it is fixed.

Hi, I took the computer to the Apple Store and they found that the graphics card was the source of the issue. Told me it would cost something like £420 to repair which in my opinion isn't worth the fix. I'm having to resort for getting a new computer as the macbook is now nothing better then a paper weight.

If you're in the UK you're lucky as you can use the Sale of Goods act against Apple. http://www.jamesinman.co.uk/2014/01/using-the-sale-of-goods-act-against-technology-companies/ I know many people have gotten free repairs or replacement units so far.

Unfortunately I bought the computer in Hong Kong so I can't go that route. I'm hoping something will happen with the class action lawsuit in the US which will lead to a worldwide repair/replacement scheme. But we will just have to wait and see
