Hi Folks,

I have an Early 2011 Macbook pro. I had problems with the RAM about a year ago that was causing the three beep random **** down issue and since then replaced it with 2 8GB RAM cards. The problem still seems to persist, it shuts down randomly - sometimes with the three beep problem, sometimes without. Restarting it sometimes seems to work for an indefinite amount of time.

I have tried all the standard methods of resetting SMC, PRAM, run the hardware test etc. Here's the log from the last instance but I dont know if it will have any info about the larger problem. Could it be a harddisk related issue, would changing to a SSD help?

Thanks for your response mate. Any way to test this or confirm a bad GPU diagnosis?
Nope. Three beeps indicate RAM issue, and ONLY a RAM issue.

Have you cleaned the RAM slots or areas around it? I had to get it cleaned so the problem would go away in my old laptop.

I've tried cleaning the surrounding areas with a microfiber cloth. Anything else I should be doing?

Maybe you have a loose RAM socket(s), bad connection. That would be difficult to fix. You can try Apple hardware test but that probably would not detect anything, rather crash.

Okay, I have an update. I did a clean install of Yosemite. I then ran disk utility which failed and asked me to restart the device and run it again from the boot screen. I also installed iStat Pro to keep a closer eye on the temperatures and even though everything looked fairly normal, I installed SMCFanControl and set it to a high fan rotation preset. Haven't had a random shutdown since then and its been about 2 days of average use now. Hope this sticks.

Next steps would be to replace my HDD for a SSD(hopefully something goes on sale soon) and replace the battery. I have my eye on either a 128GB Samsung 850 Pro or the 256GB Samsung 840 Pro. Thank you guys for your help.

If it goes wrong again take one stick of ram out at a time.

If it crashes with only one in could be the so-dimm socket that holds the memory stick in. Disconnect the battery, use compressed air and wiping all the connections of the module connector with a cotton bud soaked in denatured isopropyl and allowing to dry thoroughly before refitting may alleviate it. These sockets are one of the more probable things to go wrong on a MBP, they go through the multilayered board direct to the CPU where that board gets gets rather hot and narrow.

8gb is at least liveable.
