That's a good point. As I am a mobile app developer, I would always need the latest OS in order to run the IDE like Xcode.
Im still using rMBP 15" late 2013 right now and still enjoy working with xcode, android studio, and bootstrap (sometimes using adobe photoshop), i have never an issue.

I used to use a MacBook Air 2012 (8GB RAM) for my development. But unfortunately it failed to start up early last year and the cost of repair is more than half of the cost of the latest MacBook Air. :(

Desktops can probably last forever, but with laptops they get tossed around more, have more heat issues, etc, so it's riskier imo.

Yeah, that was my hang-up. Reading (no exaggeration) well over 200 descriptions of 2015 MBP's for sale, there was not one... not one single machine that didn't have some kind of little nick or scratch somewhere, nor the vast majority below a certain price point (a high point) that didn't have at least one dent, bend, big scratch, or screen issue. Then i look at iMacs, and even seeing just a few... most are 100% pristine. They sit on desks. Most might get moved 6" once a year to clean the dust behind them. And then yeah.... the heat. The battery cycles. The fact that laptops can find themselves in many different environments... hot, cold, humid, dry, vibrations, etc... getting bumped for extended periods when being carried... and NONE of this is visible to the user.

I went with new. I'm MORE than happy i did.

A friend found me a cheap 2015 15" MBP. She said the owner said 'its perfect, but wont turn it on'. It needed a battery and reboot. It was cheap, all i had to do was fix it. The case and screen itself looked near-perfect. I took it to my Mac guy. This is what he found inside...

When i asked my friend to ask the original owner what happened, she finally admitted "it might have gotten a tiny bit wet... but we put it in rice instantly, so its fine. Just needs a battery.'. My Mac guy said it looked like it had been sitting in water for months. Everything was rusted together.
