I recently had a look at the Surface Pro at the store with it's case covered in alcantara type cover, which is apparently the original cover for them and it felt absolutely incredible, soft and with a very nice feel. Has anybody come across a very solid and high quality Alcantara solution similar to that for 2015 MBP ?

I saw one of those. It felt like stroking a Taun Taun, very odd for a keyboard.

And yes I imagine after a few weeks use it'll resemble a tattered wet dog.

Don't see this to be a problem, can always replace or dry clean it. Might also help to wash your hands before using a laptop. The feel is better than anything else, however.
So far all I found are some stickers, which is something completely different.
Even with clean hands, oils will make their way. That's why laptops are made of hard materials. They would look horrible in a short time.
