This morning, the screen of my MacBook Pro went dark while FaceTiming. Initially, this seemed fluky because I could still hear my girlfriend and she could hear and see me as well. After rebooting the computer, the screen worked fine and went to get breakfast. However, once I came back to do some work, the screen was dark again but this time a reboot didn't do the trick.

Now upon closer inspection with a flashlight, I notice that the screen is at its lowest brightness setting and that everything besides the screen works fine (i.e. internet, sound, keyboard backlight etc.). The only problem is that the screen is unresponsive when I try to adjust the brightness level with the F1 and F2 buttons. I can visually see that the brightness indicator works, but it doesn't translate to the actual brightness of the screen. I checked to make sure that the automatic brightness adjustment settings under Display in Systems Preferences was turned off.

I tried the following:
- Safe reboot: Shift + On/Off button
- SMC reboot: Control + Option + Shift + On/Off button
- NVRAM reboot: Command + Option + P + R + On/Off button

But so far no success.

After some research on the Apple website, I found that Apple has issued a backlight service program for the 2016 13 inch MacBook Pro. I believe I am eligible for this program since my MacBook fits the requirements.

Link to the service program.

Do you guys have any other methods I can try to get to screen to function normally again? Because otherwise I think I have to make an appointment with Apple and due to COVID-19 I don't know how long it will take before they can take a look at the computer, let alone start making repairs.

Thanks!

Same thing happened to my MBP 13” 2017. I’m using it right now connected to an external display.
i also tried everything and nothing worked.

Pisses me off that such a new MAC has gone bad.
even more so when a MacBook from 2006 and another one from 2011 are still working.

I’m gonna use an external display as well. I also made an appointment with an Authorized premium seller in the mean time.

Yes you are right, I had a 2008-2009 MacBook that lasted me 7.5 years without any problems and this one has had so many issues in the first 3.5 years after purchase.
