Hi,

I just noticed this on my 3 weeks old MacBook Pro 13 2019 2 TB ports. Seems to me this might be a swollen battery. I will bring it in obviously to be checked by Apple, but what do you guys think ?

The computer has been making little creaking noise coming from the top/bottom case while it's being handled open.

Any advice?

Looks like battery has aged pretty fast, if I understand correctly, it was not like that new?
Have you noticed any other warning signs of battery problems like low battery run time, battery getting hot, uneven trackpad (is the height difference to chassis even in all edges) or palm rest area bulging? What does battery health say? Is it Simplo or DSY battery (CoconutBattery app shows battery brand)? I bet it is the first one.

I noticed with my MBP 2019 (2TB) that battery is aging pretty fast because run times on battery are already much lower but I have already 37 charge cycles. I haven't noticed any bottom plate swelling yet, but my trackpad is uneven (but it was like that when it was new, so must be installed wrong or perhaps battery was tiny bit malformed on the upper side when it was installed).

I doubt it's the battery, it's just poor fitment/seating of the lower case. Sometimes they don't sit perfectly flush for no real reason other than manufacturing variability, being mass produced.

Take it to a brick n mortar Apple Store and get it checked out.
Don't wait another day to do this!
If you snooze, you're gonna lose!

They will probably take it for repair immediately, or give you a new one.

MAKE SURE YOUR DATA IS BACKED UP BEFORE YOU TAKE IT IN !!!
(shouting intentional)

I don't think it was, I am a bit mental with this thing. So it is something that I would have noticed out of the box. It seems it developed in 1 or 2 days. The laptop is not getting hot when used, but the top case does get hot while charging. Charging Time is quite short, akin to fast charging. No bulge on the top case, trackpad etc..

Battery life ok, similar or a bit better than my 2014 rmbp that is at 93% battery usage and 367 cycles.

On this model, Coconut battery is displaying 13 cycles and battery degradation is at 97.9, but it seems like the more I use the system, the more it goes down.

Is 97% normal after 13 cycles ?

Manufacturer is Simplo.

So...spoke with Apple, issue seems to be a manufacturing defect, they did propose to fix the device no cost. 7-10 days turn around. But then again, it’s 21 days old. I feel like I’m getting screwed over here. I payed for a new full price device and currently said device is absolutely new, mint. If I accept the repair and I will get back a “fixed and opened” device, akin to refurbished. I could of simply pay 360$CAD less for a refurbished one from apple form the start. Especially since a repaired device from the depot could easily come back with scuff marks that weren’t there from the start.

Not only that, but the device as it has an issue, is not eligible to AppleCare+. I did expect a straight swap as the device is new, has a manufacturing defect and well I can’t be out 10 days without the device. “express replacement” options aren’t avaible in canada.

I don’t know what to say about the service I am receiving.
I feel Apple is treating their laptop service like a dealership, no replacement for defects but repairs. But again, when I had an issue on a brand new Honda, the issue was solved in 1 day.

Yeah you are right. You should insist on a full return and buy a new one. Even though their return policy is officially 14 days, the Apple store has discretion to extend it to 30 days. Obviously this was flawed from the beginning and even dangerous. You shouldn't have to get a refurb unit.

I would escalate. If you went to a store, try the manager, then call Apple. If you did it over the phone, you may want to try going to a store.

Sounds pretty dissapointing that new MBP battery run times are only about equal as 5 year old unit with worn battey.

97% battery health at 13 charge cycles not really normal in my opinion but unfortunately very common issue with batteries sold these days and I believe not considered faulty in warranty terms. My MBP still show over 100% health at 37 charge cycles but run time on battery really low so I don’t much value the health reading it claims.

Manufacturer is Simplo.
By the way I haven’t noticed any reports or photos of swollen DSY battery but this one I’ve seen plenty but could be just coincidence.

What is your battery manufacturing date?

Definitely sounds frustrating. I would also hate the idea of sending my unit to service when it is almost new and in mint condition as they never seem to come back looking the same but I have no experience if Apple service is better in this regard but every other brand I have gone thru that has been that units come back with all kinds of minor or even worse cosmetic damages.
I would definitely not just quietly accept what they offered you.

I would not accept a repair if that repair disqualifies you from getting AppleCare+. Demand a replacement if that is the case and immediately get AppleCare+.

Apple replaced the laptop in the end. But yeah, taking Apple care after this battery issue just in case.
