I have exactly the same symptoms discussed on the forum. I have a 17" 2009 MacBook Pro and I had the airport off and cannot be turned on after the machine was suspended. Sometimes on power-up, I get airport card not installed. Sometimes, it just works and I cannot detect any pattern for the machine's behavior. I am nearly ready to take it to the apple store since it is under warrantee. Then it works for an extended period of time. I have really enjoyed the machine. I hope I am not headed for a number of repairs for this symptom.

What's interesting is that I have a 13" and I have similar problems. After waking up from hibernation or sleep, Airport might or might not turn on. If it's the latter, it'll say either "Airport Card not installed" or "Turn Airport on". Once again if it's the latter, I try and click it and nothing happens. Have you also been experiencing random freezes? Also, sometimes it won't start up, and I have to force shut it down while it's trying to start up. I have a Genius Bar appointment tomorrow, so will keep you informed :)

I did this and it worked

  • I got this off another forum from a guy who had the same problem with his airport card. It worked for me
He called tech support at apple and they told him to

  • shut down computer
  • remove power cable and battersy
  • hold down on power button for 5 seconds
  • reinstall battery and power cord
  • hold down on the command, options, p & r keys and press down on the power button
  • keep doing this until you hear three start up chimes.
  • Then restart

MacbookPro 15" and POOR Airport Card!!

I have a MacbookPro and ever since I got it, wirelessly has been poor, unacceptable and downright annoying at best. About 3 years ago, when I had AppleCare, they had nothing to say other than there must have been a problem with the location of the laptop in relation to the router. I used a PC, which was MUCH better instead. I have stayed away since then. I am now doing some consulting work requiring me to use the router in the inn I am staying at. My $400 Dell laptop connected just fine, but this past weekend, I got a bad file or virus so I can't get it to boot up so I am forced to use my crummy $1500 MacbookPro for Internet again. I tried ALL DAY yesterday and NOTHING. A while back I found a recommendation on a forum that said to reset Safari. I tried it and it worked ONCE. I tried everything yesterday and it would not connect EVEN ONCE. I am just about ready to throw this thing out the window. A $1500 laptop (and an Apple at that) will not connect, but a $400 PC laptop will. Guess I need to do a full transition back to my PC.

I would sure appreciate and help before I do so.

Thanks so much and sorry for the venting, but aggravation is an understatement.

i have been having this problem like you guys.
random crashing. airport randomly goes away and i have to keep restarting.

been to genius bar twice. as my warranty has expired they cant do much.
did disk permissions, reset pram and and all that usual malarky. i replaced my power pack as it busted too. still no good.

so it should be a logic board and airport problem then? how much would it be to replace these if im out of warranty?
is it even worth it?

This issue troubled me for months. Finally, I brought my laptop in, and it was a very simple fix. The cable connecting the airport card was bad --- not the card itself. Cheap, fast, and effective repair.
