hi all

Would be grateful for any help. New MacBook Pro 13 inch. Working fine then I shut down put it in its case and went home. About an hour and half later got the MacBook out and it was hot and the fan was loud.

I tried to boot and it froze with the screen black and just the Apple logo on, the fan was very loud. I reset the SMA and the PRAM and it appeared to boot but I noticed that it wasnt charging so I restarted and it froze again. So I repeated the above and eventually got it working but by now it was low on charge.

Rang Apple support and they walked me though the PRAM and SMc again but it wouldn’t start. Then about 30 mins later it made a noise so I pressed the power button and it started and booted normally. However it was still not charging.

It is now dead due to lack of charge. I have unplugged it and left it alone.

Could this be an issue that it didn’t shut down properly and then overheated in its case which was in my bag. And the battery is still hot so won’t accept charge?

Thanks for any help

Josh

Was it already running when you removed it from the case? If yes, sounds to me like the MacBook overheated because the MacBook didn't shut down before being put in the case, sleep was chosen instead of shut down but it wasn't actually sleeping when it was put in the case, or it was shut down or sleeping before it was put in the case and something caused it to fully power on.

I recommend taking it to the apple store asap.

Yes the fan was on but the laptop was closed when I got out Of the case. I definitely shut it down as I was with someone and I asked them to wait for it to fully shut down.

Thanks for commenting.

Since it was fully shut down, something must have caused it to power up.

When shutting down my Air, I notice that the screen goes black but there is a very faint image of the spinning pin wheel. I have to wait until that disappears so I know the machine is completely powered off. I'm not sure if the same happens with your MacBook.

Just got it sorted, as I work from it and really didn’t want to start again if this was a simple fix.

How did you fix it?

HI
I haven't fixed it. I just don't want to start again with a new MacBook if it is a simple fix, but so far not happened. Hence why asking for help here :). But it looks inevitable that it will have to go back.

regards
Josh

Hi

Update. Left it charging overnight and this morning it booted perfectly. All USB ports working.

Running a battery test now to see how long it lasts to check for any damage there.

My amateur theory is that it overheated and would not accept a charge until it had cooled down sufficiently.
Thanks all

Josh

I was wondering for people who carry their laptop in a bag full of books, could it squeeze the device to the point the presses key would start the device?

I was thinking either this or an application that might awaken? This is very strange and would also like to know what is causing this. So far, 40% of the time I shut down my MacBook Pro and the remaining 60% of the time I simply let it sleep by shutting the screen and this hasn't happened to me yet. But would like to know to avoid this happening.

OP:

You said you kept in "in a bag".
As others have pointed out above, BE SURE that when it's "in the bag", other stuff is not pressing against it.

This could also impact the display. When the lid is closed, there's very little clearance between the surface of the screen and the keyboard, and you DON'T want the two of them making contact. It could damage the very thin "sprayed on" anti-glare coating on the display surface.

Just something to be aware of, and a precaution to take.

Another thing is to check if the case is loose enough that the MacBook Pro opens slightly to have it turned on while in the OPs bag?

thanks All,

I keep it in this case
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inateck-Ma...222857&sr=1-3&keywords=inateck+macbook+pro+13

and then in a bag. I do however have a cloth that goes over the keyboard whilst it is closed. I have always had this with multiple MacBooks over the years but perhaps the design of the latest ones with the very thin keyboard brings the risk of it switching on. Appreciate all the advice. Been out all day and the MacBook Pro was dead when I got home, as per the plan. It is now charging again (I Hope)
