I’ve just taken delivery of my brand new MacBook Pro and I’m delighted. However, I’m having a major headache trying to sync my iMessages from my iPhone and iPad to my Mac.

I’m signed into my iCloud account on all devices, my iPad and iPhone mirror each other with what numbers and email address to send and receive messages to and from but it’s still not working. I can send messages from my Mac but it won’t download previous history conversations.

I’ve watched countless videos on YouTube and looked at Apple help pages but it still won’t sync with previous conversations.

Can anyone help, my patience is running very thin!

My first question is are you currently storing your Messages in the iCloud? This was a new feature starting in the most recent iOS 11.4, and MacOS 10.13.5. If you aren’t you will need to go to settings on your iPhone and set to store messages in the iCloud and do the same with you Mac, then they should sync.

EDIT: I should add that this setting is not on by default. If you do not have iCloud message storage turned on, then any device you sign into will only show messages sent/received since you’ve signed onto that device.

Ah thanks for that. I’ve just read on another blog on the net that the newest macs don’t allow you to retrieve/sync older messages only those that are sent/received since you sign in??

I’ll double check but if I recall correctly when I reinstalled the newest High Sierra update on my MacBook Pro it grabbed all messages in the iCloud which synced from my phone. You might have to play with it a bit.

Mind you this is only if you have High Sierra version 10.13.5 installed and have iCloud message storage turned on on your phone and Mac. If you have one of the older versions installed still, then yes, you’ll only see messages since you’ve signed in.
