You're over the 4 year period as per the original extended warranty provided by Apple over this part.

Time to invest in a new computer.

I agree. By the time you go through all of the legal BS, it would just be easier to buy a new computer.

So wait, your going to sue Apple because the computer you bought which comes with a 1-year limited warranty lasted 4 years and 7 months..?

I would say if anything your computer lasted far beyond anything that would have been considered poor quality. On top of that, Apple originally addressed this issue by setting a legally standing qualification date period for products to be covered. Your MacBook does not fall in this range.

Although I would understand why they wouldnt help out after their extended warranty has passed, I must say I find it very very fabulous that Apple shows this kind of good will and helps out like this when someone is in a jam, especially when its special circumstances like with the 8600 GPU's. :)

***UPDATE***

I was contacted this morning by an Apple representative who informed me that they will be replacing the Logic Board, for free, at my earliest convenience.

Thank you for your help, support and advice.

It is a valid claim under the Sale Of Goods Act for the reasons you put. It was defective from manufacturing at the time of purchase and it was not something that subsequently developed. In my opinion, you should have asked for a replacement though as the replacement still has a faulty 8600M and will likely, ultimately, fail in the same way.

For all others commenting in this thread, in the UK we have protection as a consumer from products that were defective at the time of purchase for up to 6 years. The warranty is completely unrelated and irrelevant.

Awesome! I'm glad it worked out... and that someone at Apple who DOESN'T have their head up their arse helped you.

Most Brits don't have a lawyer on speed dial as we're quite well adjusted and generally full of common sense. It's perfectly possible to take court action via the Small Claims Court (for claims unto £5000) without a lawyer.

we have the same thing in the US; and some jurisdictions have an arbitration hearing prior to court to try to resolve issues without going to court. You don't need a lawyer but in some places you can be represented by one. EIther way if the amount is high enough it doesn't hurt to discuss the facts and how to proceed with a lawyer to be in the best position possible.

Sale of Goods Act FTW

I'm very glad you got satisfaction over a recognised flaw in your laptop, Apple did the decent thing without you resorting to litigation and so they should have.
Unlike America's Wild West attitude to consumer rights, Britain remains civil, especially when the goods are clearly not of "merchantable quality", so much so that even their manufacturer admits the problem.
Score 1 for the little guy. :)

Good to hear, Apple decided to provide you this convenience.

Good for you! I just noticed this thread and gave it a read. I didn't really know that the SOGA worked differently in the UK. For me, I probably would have just bought a new computer, but I'm glad everything worked out for you, and you're getting your machine repaired. Congrats.
