you might take a look at this program. i use it to manually control the back lighting on my mbp. i find that manually controlling it is a far better solution for me.

Thanks for the lab tick link! My problem was a 5 meters high window in front of me at work, the keyboard never lighted up and I was unable to see the keys. Now I can just turn it on when I want, great!
