I got my mbp in august and the battery health is already down to 88%. Is it defective or should I calibrate it and see what happens

Definitely calibrate it. Have you ever calibrated it?

How many cycles does it have on it?

I have 82 cycles. How exactly do you calibrate it?

Wow, I got mine two months before you and I'm at 96% with 73 cycles. Calibrate by running down the battery all the way, then letting it sit for >5hrs before plugging back in/starting up. Once it's back to full charge the health might change. The fact that you haven't ever done it could mean it's just reporting incorrectly.
