Hmm... I never really timed it but my first generation Macbook Pro takes a few minutes to boot. It used to be very fast. Now it takes like 30 seconds to unsleep :D

I never measured the boot time in mine, but its fast enough so I dont need to keep it in sleep mode, plus saving battery :)

It barely uses the battery. That is one thing that makes Mac's so good, is the sleep is very efficient and responsive.

So much easier to just shut the lid, goes to sleep instantly, carry about in your bag, then open it at your desk and it wakes up instantly.

A bit late on the thread here, but I got really annoyed about my boot time today. It took 1 min to login screen and then another minute to the desktop when everything had loaded. Really annoying.

Should I reinstall Leopard maybe?

MacBook Pro SR 2.4, 4 GB ram.

1 minute to login screen isn't bad - you do have 4GB's worth of memory to address during boot. How much have you got to load when you login? Having a lot of applications (Mail, iCal, Messenger is what I have and Messenger really slows up the process) load will cause a slow down.

Try eliminating all the applications you have set to load during login and it'll go a lot faster.

You should just put it to sleep though ;)

How modern computer can take at least 3-4 minutes to boot? I can not imagine that. Maybe I've a Mac too long...

you've had a mac for too long. My MBP took like 30 seconds when I didn't have a login screen, now that I do I don't know, but it's still pretty fast.

With my old dell, even though it was a fast computer once I was using Windows, I would turn it on in the morning then go grab an apple, take a few bites, and then I would start working... lol

I usually put it to sleep all the time. Recently though sometimes when it wakes up there is something wrong with the process WindowServer as scrolling and moving windows (do we really say that, feels strange somehow...) takes forever.

I don't really have any application set to open on reboot but I probably have some background processes and such.

Mine is fairly fast as well and I love it. I would say at least under 45 seconds, maybe 30. I don't have any programs running at the start-up.

To those of you with multi-minute boot times: My current-generation MBP with 4 GB of RAM was taking up to 5 minutes to boot. The problem turned out to be that I have one of those 13-port USB hubs with every imaginable type of USB device connected. (Yeah, I know it's geeky, but it works for me. :)) I suppose my MBP must be polling all those devices. When I disconnect the hub, boot time is less than a minute. So those of you with inordinately long boot times, try disonnecting any USB or FireWire devices you have, and see if it makes a difference.

Do you mean that more RAM = longer boot because more memory has to be addressed ?

Yesh & absofruitly.

Sorry about that "The Office" reference. But yes, the memory is checked during startup, so the more you have, the longer it'll take to boot up. It's not a HUGE increase, but it's worth it.

Boot times are not a big deal for me unless it accounts for more then 10% of my possible usage time. If 1/n > .1 (n=total usage time/boot time) then the boot time is a problem.

Ha! Even my old Windows PC (Celeron :D) boots in less than a minute (56 sec). Perhaps it's not as bad as I thought. Or maybe it just has pitifully little RAM ;).

I'd be quite annoyed with 2 hours boot time even if I planned to continuously used it for the next 20 hours (and yes, it happened to me a few times)...

If it took your Mac 2 hours to boot, there is obviously something wrong with it. Most likely a failing hard drive.

I'm not a native speaker, but I think "would be" indicates it didn't happen... so it's a logical conclusion I referred to 20+ hours of actually using the computer ;). Sorry if it was confusing.

Sorry, I read it as "I'm annoyed" not "I'd be annoyed".

My friend's 2.4 SR MBP running 10.4 seems like it boots up instantly. My Penryn takes about 40seconds to a minute.

So it probably is Leopard, but boot times aren't incredibly important. You should just let the computer sleep :p
