This is the image which comes up and it completely freezes.

I have a mid 2010 15" MBP. 2.4ghz. I5.

About two months ago it started having this problem while I was gaming. At the time I only had 4 gigs of ram and I thought that could have been the issue. I then replaced the ram to 8gigs and I am still having the problem.

I have ran the extended apple hardware test and nothing bad has come up.

Unfortunately my mac's applecare has run out and am nervous of the bill they may charge me so I figured I would come here first for advice. Thanks

Doesn't look good. I'd say bring to apple to check it out, at the very least they'll tell you what failed.

To my uneducated eyes, it looks like the GPU at the very least

If a clean install of OS X doesnt resolve then its likely a hardware (GPU more than likely) issue.
