Hey guys, got some good and bad news. I got a call back from Apple today. Their engineers have been able to successfully reproduce this problem and it affects the current generation of MacBook Pros. It's apparently likely related to the graphics card.

I've been advised that a fix may be made available in a software update in the future that repairs it.

So i'm curious because I have the same machine as you, Mbp 15" with AMD. And I tested cold boot both with minidp-dvi in the TB port and also the hdmi port and yes the internal display won't turn on,
I had to close the lid and open it again to "detect" the display.

I'm actually liking this as I can have my mac open without closing the screen in clamshell mode. But then again the mac takes air from the bottom.
