Anybody know what the display type (e.g. IPS, TN) that are used on the Macbook Pro's? If so who make them?

MBPs use TN panels. Not sure about the manufacturer but my guess is LG

Thats insane that the TN panels they have produce such good colours!

Anybody know if there are any monitors on the market which use the same display panel?

It is not insane. There are quite a few TN Panel in desktop monitors that come close or exceed this.
The Dell XPS RGBLed Displays use TN Panels too afaik and they have much better colors. Color Gamut is really more up to the backlight than the Panel. Most manufactures only equip their notebooks with crap TN Panel that offer no contrast, terrible viewing angels and they have no reason to use a better backlight.
The benefit of IPS or VA Panels would be better viewing angels than even good TN Panels and much better contrast, also better calibration options. IPS usually also less banding than the others.

    Output of

    Code:
    ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
on my 2010 MBP (hi-res, anti-glare option) is:

    LTN154MT07
    Color LCD

According to Anandtech this appears to be a Samsung panel.

What monitor would you recommend to get roughly the same colours as the macbook pro or better? (23inch +)
