What would SMC have to do with an external HD?

I don't really know and the SMC knowledge base seems to have no info on that anymore.

But when I had problems connecting Firewire HDDs to my iMac or MacBook (Pro) it worked like a charm.

Don't know about the new MBPs though, with their non-removeable batteries.
