Reset vram or startup in safe mode. Find both methods thru google.

So Calif
Put it in Target mode, connect via firewire or thunderbolt to another working Mac and backup files, run disk utility to check disk integrity, then if good, restore the drive image with a fresh OS.

Can it boot to "safe mode"?
Hold down shift key continuously at boot.

Can it boot to the "recovery partition"?
Hold down "command-R" at boot

Can it boot to "internet recovery"?
Hold down "command-OPTION-R" at boot. (wifi password needed)

Main partition is corrupted.
If you have data that needs back up, I would try to connect it to a working Mac via target mode.
