Macbook Pro Early 2008 Backlight intermittantly goes out @ login

Installed Mountain lion yesterday,. now whats happening is if i restart the machine or power up after it being off the backlight flickers then goes off after the apple logo, this happen s50% of the time....... However if i use sleep there is never any issue? can anyone shed any backlight on this?

Ive trawled the web,. inverters & cables & software updates are mentioned,. how could it be hardware though?,. and if it is s/ware i cant find a fix anywhere,.......
