Try unplugging ALL peripherals (mouse, ipod, etc) and restarting.

Thanks for the reply. I did try that with no luck. I'm leaving for the apple store in a few minutes. There are all kinds of logins and passwords saved on my computer. There's no way that I can let them ship this thing out. And, I cannot do without it for a day. This has caught me completely off guard. I expected something like this from Windows. I'll probably be buying a new computer today. I'm a little reluctant to buy another Apple right now. I switched in November.

I did the update. After rebooting to complete it, my screen stopped working and my MBP doesn't boot up anymore. No bong sound when restarting. Caps lock lights up, number lock lights up and the volume increase/decrease keys make the expected sounds.

It's almost as if I'm at the desktop with no screen. However, I've had the power and battery disconnected - so that's no possible. I also haven't logged in. So my four month old MBP is finished. This is really unbelievable.

I suppose after installing the update (and following the shutdown) you did press and hold down the power button until the sleep light starts to flash as per the instructions? - just a thought.

Hey the firmware update has also fixed the sleep/wake problems on my 2.2 SR MBP. :D
I'm very happy that my very pricey :apple: machine is finally working as it should!
Also for those interested, the firmware update changed my desktop background to the leopard default supernova/space/stars image. But this one was easy to fix :p

This can't be?? Is it true? Can a 6 month old problem really finally be fixed? I'm updating asap.

It only happened sporadically on mine, so I won't know if it worked for a few days.

Any word on whether the "waking up with the lid closed for no reason and draining the battery down to 0" has been fixed?

Both of those problems made my MBP completely unreliable away from home.

NoooooOO! It says I don't need the update. Why Jobs Why??? I have MBP 2.2 4GB Ram.

Why don't they Fix the issue. I'm starting to think there are defective computers now and this is some big XBOX Red Ring of Death Conspiracy.

Mine wakes up from sleep now ...woot:D

Sal, try this:

It supposedly will restore your firmware if your upgrade went sour.

Good luck. I'm betting the update process was somehow interrupted or corrupted. :(

Thanks, Zorin. That looks like good advice.. I already dropped my MBP off at the local Apple store, however. If I had another Mac, I would make the CD and run back there and try to boot from it - but the MBP is my first and only Mac.. I'm working off my Dell for now...

Thanks again...

I successfully installed 1.5.1 firmware update lastnight. Something that I noticed is that when I search for a wireless network my mac no longer gets stuck for a second and the network search is much quicker as well.

What OS are you running (10.4 or 10.5)? I've noticed my computer is a lot more responsive now after running the update and I don't get a blank screen when waking the computer up from sleep. :D :apple:

Just did the update. Maybe it's just me perceiving things incorrectly, but it seems like my MBP responds faster. The Applications 'stack' in the dock used to open and close a bit jittery often whereas it doesn't on my two year old iMac and even MB's which are supposed to have less performance. So, don't know whether or not this is due to the update. Oh yeah, after reboot, my dashboard loaded quicker too.

Still, it could just be a coincidence or my perception being distorted.

It's not just you, the Applications stack on my machine opens more fluidly now as well.

This is only peripherally related, but you can also check your boot rom version by typing this in a terminal window:

system_profiler SPHardwareDataType

To see other system_profiler data types, try

system_profiler -listDataTypes

and of course the 'man' page.

I am running 10.5 - I must admit that I never installed 1.50, the reason for this was I was running the Updates from battery at a friends house and my Mac insisted that I was connected to my PSU. I could not be bothered to plug the thing in so I cancelled the firmware update. Then after reading this thread I decided to download 1.51 and install it.

I agree with you my Mac seems a lot more responsive than before the update. Mine does actually seem even faster at booting as well, I don't know if thats my imagination though.

Just wondering how many people experiencing problems resuming from sleep are running iStat Pro or iStat Menus? It appears there is a known issue, certainly with iStat Pro, on Santa Rosa Macbook Pros (http://forums.mactalk.com.au/46/39612-weird-istat-pro-problem-leopard.html).

The symptoms are a combination of:
  1. Screen remains blank for a considerable time after resume
  2. Mouse pointer and other animation effects are jerky

On my MBP there's a 100% correlation with having the iStat Pro widget installed and these problems occurring (although they don't happen on every resume from sleep). The latest version of iStat Pro (4.6) makes things better, but I was still getting the issue occasionally. I've just updated to the latest firmware, so time will tell if that has improved things.

[Yay, first post]

Anyone else having trouble with this update? I try restarting my computer, but it never seems to shut down completely (although it appears to), so that when I hold the power button down, I'm actually turning it off. Only after that can I turn it back on, wait for the blinking light/beep, etc. When it boots up, I get the same firmware update prompt again.

Have tried this shutting down via the update window and manually too. Is this happening to anyone else?

I've got version MBP31.0070.B02 (not sure where to get more specific than that).

Yeah same feeling here on my MacBook Pro 2.2GHz SR, menus, stacks and spaces seem to be smoother. The update installed without any problems. Good job Apple!

is this for all models, i can't seem to get the update, im on a penryn mbp

Unplugging USB devices with the lid closed no longer kills my display on wake. Also, my skin is clearer and I got a seat on the metro today. Not sure if it's all related though.

MBP Santa Rosa 15.4"

so you had the black screen on wake? You must have had 10.5.2 because the firmware will only update on 10.4.11 or 5.2 - Is the wake problem REALLY fixed? I know when I had 5.2 I could duplicate the black screen on wake pretty much at will... the USB change while asleep or in process of sleeping / waking was a sure way to cause a problem. I've reverted to 10.5.0, and am REFUSING to update until I have some evidence that the problem is fixed. Tell me - can you cause the problem at all any more?
