I was in the same boat. I had gotten the WD7500BPKT back in May of 2012 and found this thread and downgraded the EFI on my Mid 2009 MBP to 1.6 and everything was working great. I upgraded to 10.8.3 and my system had tremendous problems booting with a successful boot only occurring every 5-10 times. Once booted everything ran great. The problem in the verbose boot was it would not mount disk02s even though the disk could be read fine from the recovery partition. I assumed the disk had gone bad and got a replacement from WD free. Installed and no joy. I assumed I had a logic board problem but then I thought to put in the original disk I had replaced last May and voila everything worked.

As I was now stuck buying a new disk I though I might as well try upgrading the EFI back to 1.7 and, again, voila, everything worked just fine with my original disk which I had not touched!!!!

So it looks like Apple might have compensated for the issue introduced with the 1.7 firmware in 10.8.3. You might want to try re-upgrading to EFI 1.7.

re-upgraded to 1.7 , seems to be ok for the moment , it struggled a bit for the first 5 mins but seems to have settled. I think ill run it like this for a few days, but just keep the downgrade usb with me :)

Need EFI 1.7 to 1.6 downgrade file

Hi all,

I've had the same issues as everyone else here with a 6gig/s SATA II drive that my mid 2009 Mac Book Pro can't handle. It sounds like the downgrade process listed here
https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=8414998&posted=1#post8414998

works pretty well. However, all of the links to the downgrade file are dead. Can someone please post a live link to the file or tell me how to find it on the web?

Thanks so much, Robb

I can confirm, that re-upgrading to EFI firmware 1.7 on OSX 10.8.3 went smoothly and now WD Scorpio Black 500GB has been negotiated to 3gbps speed.

Still no "beach balls".

I have had some boot issues with EFI 1.6 and 10.8.3, which required to boot to recovery mode and repair disk with DiskUtility before almost each reboot.
It also sometimes got frozen on resume after sleep or hibernate.

I will see whether those issues are gone too and report.

Hey all!!

I`m so so so GLAD to make this!

I create this account only for this topic, it`s saving my life!! Get downgraded to 1.6 e now i can see my Macbook again! I recognize it again!! Happy!! :D

It was almost 1 and a half year that i can`t use my mac with dignity!!

For a few moments, i just wanna throw this mac at the wall!!

Thanks!! and sorry to testify this way....but it was a suffering with EFI 1.7!

Hi, I upgraded my 500GB Hitachi sata 3Gb/s on My MBP 5.5 to 64GB SSD ADATA SP900. When I was using Hitachi, both link speed and negaotiated speed was 3Gb/s, under EFI 1.7. However, when i upgarade to SSD, the link speed was 3Gb/s and negotiated link was 1,5Gbps. I did the downgrade to EFI 1.6 then. Surprisingly after downgrade, both link speed and negoatiated speed are 1,5Gb/s. Is that mean EFI 1.7 works better than EFI 1.6? I m using 10.9.2

Hitachi HDD + EFI 1.7 + 10.9.2

SSD + EFI 1.6 + OSX 10.9.2

I've tried to downgrade to 1.6 my MacBook Pro 5,4 and now it doesn't boot anymore, I got the error also when I try to downgrade again... Is there any way to update to lastest firmware from USB?

I'm sorry for bumping this thread but a lot of people are asking for this file and there are no working links anywhere.

Not too sure what you are looking for.
The restoration CD referenced in this thread is available for download direct from Apple, and still is available:
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL77
Sometimes, even Apple's download links go stale, but that particular image file downloads easily.

Also, you need the one that is specific for your model. This download article for the latest release shows 5 more. You would need to browse to each download page, where the systems supported are listed. Some of the restoration CDs are for only single model Macs, so browse around for the one that you need.

Hey DeltaMac,

Thanks for the reply but those images are not compatible with mid2009 mbp referenced in the thread. Also even if they were the links are broken.

I'm looking for the file that was posted several times in this topic but none of the links are working.

Cheers

After hours of searching my brother found it. For anybody who needs it, it is attached.
