MacBook Pro/El Capitan USB port not seeing device

I have a strange problem. When I insert a USB drive either directly into the computer or via my USB hub, it won't recognize on the first insert. I have to remove it and insert it in a 2nd time for the computer to see it....This happens no matter what device or drive I'm using and it's quite annoying.
