Macbook Pro Erases Itself

Hello,

My MBP mid 2010 model (upgraded to IOS Maverick) was freezing once in a while.

After a restart, my computer completely erased itself and presented me with a folder with a question mark.

I ended up doing an internet recovery and restored it, but lost all personal files.

Is this a harddrive problem, or has anyone else heard of this before?

I had a backup... from two years ago..

Is this a rare occurrence? Do I need to replace the hard drive?
