Macbook pro external monitor left or right

Hi there,

i was wondering, some people put their macbook's to the left some others right to the external display. What's the reason? My second question is, some people use lid close while connected to external monitor? Why ? Is it faster by any chance or they just want to use one display only?

On dGPU machines less heat and power drain. Some use both monitors, but if you only want external and don’t use internal clamshell is the way to go if you have external keyboard and mouse.

I installed a hanging mount for 3 27” 4K monitors above my head over the bed so I can watch p0rnhub, ****post on here and do my taxes while laying in bed.

As to the first two, pure personal preference.

As to "lid closed, is it faster" - it could be. If you're running a 5K display on, say, a 12" Retina MacBook, lid closed would probably allow a little more of that underpowered GPU to push those 5K pixels around. But on anything with a discrete GPU, or even the latest generation of Intel integrated on a 13" MBP, a single external monitor of any resolution won't see much of a performance hit by also using the laptop's screen.

For example, I used to run three external monitors on my 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, one of them a 4K, the other two 1080p. With all three going, if I also opened the MBP and used its internal display, I would see some slowdown.

But on my 2019 16" MacBook Pro, I can have three 4K displays running, and opening the lid doesn't make any noticeable difference.

In fact, if you're running heavy workloads, opening the lid might let it be faster because it can dissipate the heat better with the lid open.
