Hello there. I got my 17" macbook pro on tuesday. At that time, everything seemed to be working fine and temperatures were under control. But now, CPU temperatures have gotten up to 78 degress celcius. I don't really hear any audible fans. I'm pretty sure what I'm hearing is the hard drive spinning. I assume this is quite an issue. Can other macbook pro users really hear the fan? Thanks.

Thanks for bringing this up. I have also been very confused about the fans rarely kicking in. You can get them to run if you start two instances of

    yes > /dev/null

in a terminal and wait a minute or so. The first time I heard my fans was during the SMC firmware update (which should be already on your newer MBP).

So I'm wondering whether this laptop could be much cooler if the fans were running at a higher level. Can anybody suggest a software tweak to achieve this?

Hmm, I didn't hear the fans kick in at all. It got up to 81 degrees in 45 seconds. I'm guessing this isn't normal?

I know the things have fans inside. However they never come on in every day situations. Interesting that over three months after the introduction apple hasn't noticed this defect...

I've never heard the fan on my MacBook fwiw, but with Core Temp Duo, I see that they must be coming on. Amazing.

I don't think my fans are working at all. It got up to 82 earlier when compressing a quicktime movie. Does this sound correct? I think I may go to the apple store tomorrow..

With the normal (bad) thermal paste application, the fans rarely come on because the heat isn't transferred properly to the heat pipe (of which the fans cool).

My fans are on pretty often, especially during demanding tasks (like playing World of Warcraft). Most of the time they're at a quiet hum, but they're on.

If you never hear them come on, even after keeping the system at full load for several minutes, you might want to check with Apple. I heard the fans come on full blast at around 85C without the thermal paste reapplication.
