I am assuming it is a private school, and thus part of the tuition or whatnot includes the computer?

TO get back on topic, a 13" should be fine and homeowners' or a mack warranty would cover past AppleCare

By the way, as a high schooler, I was able to get a free iPod with the program.

But then again, I bought mine online and I don't think Apple had school specific stores back then.

If you think you won't have a problem with minimal drive space, the Air is awesome! But "future proof", it'll be a PITA to look for anyone that can replace or upgrade the Air's SSD and RAM. The 13" Pro is cheaper and you'll get more power and SSD/RAM customization.

SSD vs Sandy Bridge in future proofing? Well, neither. SSDs get cheaper as months go by and Sandy Bridge will be replaced with Ivy Bridge next year. But If you'll compare the current 13" MBA or a 13" MBP, in the future if you can spare the cash and max out their specs, an MBP with 8gb RAM and 512gb SSD is a beast of a machine than a max'd MBA. You even have OptiBay option for your MBP.

Ah, ok thank you! So I'm thinking of getting the MBP 13" base model and possibly adding the SSD later or the Toshiba R700-S1312 they're offering. I know that this an Apple site and all, but would anyone have any insite on there two computers? Again, with the Toshiba it's $1499 with the onsite support and book fee included against the Macbook Pro with about $1750 with the book fee and offsite AppleCare included...

With Apple products, you'll always pay a premium compared to same-spec'd Windows machines. But heck yeah it's worth it (biased of course). :D

Happy shopping!!!

Personally, I go with the highest-spec MBP 13" you can afford.

I work as a prof and I bought the high-spec unibody MacBook that I could in Jan 2009 and I just ran into the first issues with it being somewhat slow (and I push it extremely hard by opening/editing 4GB image files). Also, I assume that an upgrade to 8GB RAM will allow me to get at least 3 useful years out of it.

I really DO NOT LIKE the MacBook Air because it doesn't have a security slot for a lock. To me that's a huge oversight if the machine is going to be used on a daily basis as I assume they'll walk off quite easily and by sold on the black market that the students have going on at the school.

As far as needing more power (blah, blah, blah), I probably use the machines harder than almost any other set of users and I find that the high-spec MBP 13" will more than meet your needs.

Also, I recommend against the larger MBPs because they're very expensive and not very portable. For the price of a 17" MBP, I'd rather have a 13" MBP and a 21" iMac.

As an aside, do schools in the US really mandate a computer purchase? To be honest, I think that's kind of ridiculous and I can't imagine that one would learn more than with paper/pencil ... in fact, I'd be willing to bet than you'd learn less and become more dependent on technology, but that's a discussion for a different day.

I can only wish I had mbp when I was going to high school.

me too!!! :D I had to foam at the mouth all through college at everyones toys. but alas I have my own!

I would have said the Air, but longterm wise, go with the pro. 13 inch. Keep it mobile, in college you will not be sorry.

Buy a 17 inch Macbook Pro 2.3 ghz highest end model. It will be future proof and in 4 years, it will still be worth $1000 for resale value. Pretty good for a 4 year old computer.

OBJECTION!

There's no such thing as a future proof computer. Please stop blatantly lying to people

1. not sure
2. yes
3. not sure, 3 years is plenty for a laptop though

But word of caution, if you're a skinny Asian like me, the 15" isn't that portable.

LOL that made me giggle!!!!

And I agree with everyone else, I'd get Air if I were you...cheaper, super portable and more than enough for what you'll be using it for. :D
