I saved my cart on Apple.com for later just so I could keep track of what I was getting and was going to order from there tomorrow morning when my refund hits my account...

while waiting though, I got an email from someone at Apple telling me they can save me money by calling them directly and that I she would love to help me finalize my purchase etc. etc. My first reaction was...okay this isn't even Apple and somehow someone got my info and was scamming...

But then I called the number and it was indeed Apple so I have been communicating with the rep and it seems as though when you leave your cart open and not paid for then they get "nervous" if you will that you will not finalize your purchase and they contact you to try to pursuade you into finalizing everything.

I think I will go through her, just because they will offer considerable discounts and extras like you experienced. I googled the issue and a few other blogs came up where people were talking about how apple contacted them and were trying to make the sales...

Hopefully they have a messenger bag to fit my 17" too :)

That is a great tip! Everyone should know about that...

Maybe if I fill up my grocery kart, and then just idle near the checkout counter, i'll get offered some screaming deals on pasta and milk.

u should also check out freestylesession.com forum
there are few people there who does video editing and does it professionally
i was gonna say get matte for screen but i guess i'm late?
i do heavy photoshop and getting into video, never liked glossy for those works. if i want glossy for watching movies i can just grab an extra monitor but not for photos or video works, can't stand the reflection on the screen.
anywayz hope u enjoy ur new mac! i'm waiting for mine

Hey...

not doing too much on photoshop etc. even still I use it mostly indoors anyways...not too many windows either that would create a huge glare.

I think for the videos it will be a little better.

I will check it out a lot of my friends were at freestylesession last year. :)

In fact I did a commercial in Puerto Rico when it was going on and some of the guys from knucklehead zoo flew straight out after FSS to meet us to film the commercial . :)

I like the glossy though...:) I guess I could always hook up a different monitor if I needed to work on photoshop though at the house or something :) vice versa...

Hey Everyone! I am awaiting my nice tax return (should be here any day now) and I am going to order my MacBook Pro that I have been trying to order for what seems like years now... (trip to Jamaica last year took my last year's pro money :) I have questions though and everyone on this forum seems really knowledgable so here goes....

I am a professional dancer and have a ton of video footage that I will be wanting to edit upon immediate arrival of my MBP...so that should help some of you have an idea of what I will be using it for. I also will be doing some photo montages for work purposes and working on the building of my website...I want to get the necessary upgrades now but I can't go way way over my budget as much as I would like to...

First and foremost....I am getting the 17" with the glossy screen...any objections to glossy? I am sure no objections to 17"... :)

Second, Processor...is it worth the upgrade to the 2.6GHz? If not I think I will skip that one..

Third, Memory...I plan on using an external drive for photos and videos....is Memory something that is easily upgraded later on someone told me it is just a chip you can replace?

Fourth, Hard Drive...I have to be honest on this one I don't understand what these options mean and which one is best...more expensive best assuming? haha

Hard Drive ?????

250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
200GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm [Add $50]
300GB Serial ATA Drive @ 4200 rpm [Add $75]

Apple Remote? Anyone been able to use this is it worth it?

I don't see the option to get Office for Mac...what is the price difference between iwork..I see most people prefer office over that...

MAIN QUESTION....Video Editing...

I see the beautiful ad on Apple for Final Cut Studio 2 (which has Final Cut Pro 6) vs. Final Cut Express 4... Believe me I would want nothing more than to have that program on my Mac, is it something I should go for and do? Or do you think I will be happy with Final Cut Express 4...after looking at the site..Final Cut Express 4 seems so tiny and useless...but that is just me being a greedy software girl :)

Next...is .mac easy to use? Is it worth it...I don't know much about building sites, but I am going to be using this computer to update my website that is being built now...www.bgirlkatastrophe.com so would .mac be useful for that?

I would eventually want to build sites for other things I have going on...has anyone used .mac as a beginner site builder and had success?

Can you renew Applecare later? I want to do it but am not sure if I will have the extra $$ right now for it. I would like to do that with my next paycheck :)

Last Question.....what additional accessories will I need to get going? Am I going to be ready to go or is there anything else I need to allot money for?

I am a student but I don't see on the Apple site what the exact discount is off of the price?

Thanks!! SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS!! I want to get the best I can for my money from the get go and need all of your lovely comments for that! :)

Kat

I have a glossy screen and I love it. The main reason to choose it and the reason I chose it is you can see it outside in the sunlight. You will not be able to see anything in direct sunlight with a matte screen. Just something to consider.

As far as the 17 inch goes, I think cos you're doing video it's probably good, I had a 17 inch once, and the screen size was great, but it is not a portable machine in my opinion, and for that reason I vowed to never get one again. It's just to heavy to carry around.

The remote, well I don't think you should get one for two reasons. You can probably find a cheaper second hand one on CL, Ebay, or even MR. I have two macs, and two remotes. I have never used one ever.

As far as the 2.6 ghz goes. Processor speed doesn't matter as much as you think. Unless the difference is at least 500 mhz, don't bother. Apple preys on people in some ways who just buy the best thing these days.

The education prices are in the apple store under the education store (the top right part when you open the page)

As far as hard drive, get the largest 5400 rpm drive you can get. or if you're going to get an external along with it, which isn't a bad idea for video, get the largest 7200 rpm drive.

as far as .mac goes, i think it's only worth it if you have two macs at least. I had it for two years and stopped using it, not cos it's not useful, but because it's overpriced. but i just used if for syncing really.

Memory, get as much as you can, but not from apple.. i got 4 gigs from newegg.com for $80. Memory is more important than processor speeds, don't get the 2.6 and get all the memory you can.

Applecare can be bought within the first year.. and as far as accessories go.. get a case. and maybe an extra battery if you travel a lot. Thats about it.

Nice machine, although I would stay way from the Mighty Mouse, I had 4, returned all of them, faulty scroll and right click after a few weeks of use with each. I use the Logitech V270 now, is a perfect bluetooth mouse.

I've found the right click on the Mighty Mouse to be less than great at times, but most of the time it works fine. Horizontal scrolling can be very annoying though. I still like it. :)

2-3 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think I will ever possibly survive that long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So sad....:(

You're not alone:
We estimate your order to be shipped on or before 13 Mar, 2008.
We estimate your order will be delivered to your shipping address on or before 24 Mar, 2008 - 25 Mar, 2008.

Ugh.

I'm hoping it'll be "or before", especially as it's around Easter, so courier services might decide they want a day off. :( I've always found Apple to be very conservative with their shipping estimates, I hope that's still the case.

I'd be interested to know if you do go with .mac to publish your website, too.

Ugh....

At least yours is going out next week!! Mine isn't due out until the 27th!! So..they usually put way more time in the shipping estimates to keep people from complaining?

Did they update your shipping after you ordered and it began processing? Because the initial ship date for mine is the 27th...I am hoping that it starts processing and they send me a "hey we are sending it out early email" :)

I heard a lot of complaints about .mac so I am just going to wait and do the free trial on it and see if I like it first...

I think someone earlier said you can try it for 60 days or something..

Do you have mainly, Std definition or high definition footage / camera. FCS 2.0 has a huge learning curve. Have you dont much video production before ?

Photoshop will still be fine with a glossy screen. Graphics artist just prefer the matte a little more because the colors are a little more natural. The glossy gives you a bit more contrast so colors are somewhat more vibrant and vivid. The biggest gripe I have about glossy screens though is that they show everything that touches them such as dust and fingerprints, especially under bright lights.

You will also usually have a glare if you sit where the lighting bounces off the screen. And I've seen at least one person post saying they didn't like it because they had to sit and see themselves in the screen every time they were first turning it on lol. I doubt that part would bother you though.

As for video editing usually the matte screen is preferred because it's a little better for that but either way you should be fine. It's really just more of a personal preference thing but I do prefer the matte screen myself.
