MacBook Pro greyed out screen

This started up yesterday and was not fixed by a reboot. I can see the screen and it is not frozen or gradual. Simply the screen has a grey tint over it. If a take a screenshot and look at it on my iMac, it looks fine. It doesn't obscure anything, but it is pretty annoying. Anyone else have this problem? And solutions?

might be your backlight is acting up or dying
 
Well the backlight buttons work and the screen changes brightness fine. It isn't dull or anything, just has a grey/whitish tint to it..
 
Same Problem of Greyed Out Screen

I'm having the same problem as MajickJam. Screen occasionally greys out on 2007 MB Pro. Running Lion but otherwise pretty vanilla, standard Apple software. Grey out problem doesn't seem to have any pattern to it...like certain apps or point and clicks. Any ideas?

I have this too on the latest 2020 MacBook. Before, it just seems to right itself, but I have it at the moment.

So the screen is a normal brightness but has a gray tint over it? Or is it darker too? Does it flicker? If the latter, it could be the cable to the screen or possibly some other physical part of the screen, which can work badly intermittently. Normally you'd want Apple to check it out for you at an Apple Store ...

Yes that's right - just as others have described it. Just greyed out slightly, but perfectly usable and functioning. On this occassion I decided to reboot, and it righted itself even as it was rebooting. My feeling is that I have pressed something unwittingly?
 
You can run Apple diagnostics, or call Apple and they'll help you run diagnostics to potentially narrow down potential causes. There's a thread about sudden color shifts that might be a color version of what you're talking about.

I have this same issue with a 2020 Macbook Pro purchased a few months ago. It goes away after I restart most times, and if you change any of your display settings (or accessibility --> display settings) it changes and removes the gray tint.
 
Just ran into this myself. Fixed it by going to system preferences, then displays, then turning off the "true tone" option.
