My late 08 MBP all of a sudden wanted to start hanging on start up. I've tried the usual's like reset PRAM and ran fsck -fy and it came back ok. I tried booting into safe mode and the bar loads, then it hangs after that.

When I insert my Snow Leopard dvd it reads it for a minute or so and spits it back out.

Weird thing is that I'm on the same laptop using Windows XP under bootcamp. It boots into bootcamp flawlessly. I tested the superdrive under windows using an audio cd and iTunes plays it with no problems.

So just in case I backed up what little data I had on it(everything else is on externals).

Can anybody help me out?

I don't have a bootable or time machine back up. :(

Held down the option key while booting, selected OS X and it still hangs...
The boot.ini? Can I fix that from boot camp?

Boot into windows and select bootcamp from the menu on the lower right. Select start up in OSX.

See what happens.

No. The boot.ini problem isn't just a single file. Sorry I implied that. I meant the efi part.
