Intel i9 X-series is now established to overheat and underperform in almost all laptop manufacturers.

Now, the latest overcooking is seen in the Apple MacBook Pro, top configuration.

I see a deluge of returns of these laptops coming soon. What will Apple do with these returned (defective) laptops?

They will use them to fly eggs for employees at the canteens.

While I believe that it is conceivable that the i9 processors could overheat and throttle, which was already a known possibility, I have yet to see anything concrete saying there is an issue. Honestly, all this talk about “overheating” i9 processors in the New MBP is pure speculation.

The i5 and i7s could also get hot too if someone really pushed the 2016-17 MacBook Pro models. Seriously don’t think it’s right to be saying these 2018 i9s are “defective” laptops yet.

I’d question you... do you have one, have you experienced it “overheat”? If not this is speculation and honestly fueling a pre-misconception in readers’ minds.

It throttles like most other MBP's where the CPU cannot run continuously. Its like having a CPU burst in reverse.

So I foresee nothing other than a bunch of "why does my i9 MBP throttle?" threads...

That i9 is running too hot is not in dispute. The reports from Windows and Apple laptops are that the i9 processor does not run even at it's base quoted speed for long, forget the turbo boost.

My point here is that the professionals who actually jumped on this spec MacBook Pro to run professional software by paying a premium will not be happy, having paid a premium to get these specs, mainly for the 32 GB memory. They are also likely to return these laptops as the timing of this problem "reveal" is so close to the release of the overhauled 2018 models.

As for the videos highlighting this issue, they are plentiful in the Windows forum. The Mac people have just been introduced to this issue, and so will be running these tests themselves. Unless they are okay with this issue, they will try to return these laptops within the return period.

MacBook Pro "running hot" issue is not unique to this year's model. There were such discussions with past models, don't remember any model questioned so soon after release.

Soon, there will be more videos proving or disproving the issue. It is early days. The main reason for this discussion is that Apple allows no questions asked returns.

What is the Apple's return policy??? Even though the bad news has come again but I still want to pick up my OTB and try it out myself. If I am not satisfied with it I want to return it.

It would make sense a processor that powerful runs hot. I guess that's the chance you take buying it... however, the base processor will be plenty powerful for most people, myself included.

The i9 is an overclocked 'hot' processor. Apple aren't defying physics here. I had an XPS with an i9 and it throttled whenever it was placed under stress. The MBP is even more thermally limited. Save yourself some money, buy an i7 which will has a lower thermal profile and will therefore be able to run at consistently higher speeds. Spend the spare cash on RAM or storage.

I returned my i9 XPS for an i7 XPS which rarely throttles and will happily sit with all cores maxed out.

This isn't having a go at Apple or the MBP, many of the i9 PC laptops are falling foul of the same issue. Heck even some of the 14" quad cores are struggling (Thinkpad T480). Coffee Lake on both desktop and mobile is a hot processor, it's Intel's response to Ryzen and in effect they've stitched on a couple of extra cores.

The i9 is a bit of a marketing exercise from Intel, slightly more cache, an apparently higher binned part and higher clock speeds. It's essentially the same processor as the i7 though.

Anything bought directly from Apple, online or physical store, can be returned as Apple says:
  • "You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it."

Just like the G5 Powerbooks.

Unless you can prove he faked the test, your point is irrelevant.

I find all of these channels to be ********. But I've been a Mac user for 25 years so I just see all of these 'fake apple fans' to just be people producing content about Apple because it's profitable to do so not a love or affinity to the brand or company. There are no Fanboy apple channels who would go beyond a product that is developed for PCs and ported to mac (Premiere) and try to find out more. Instead he did a test with one application and wasted no time putting up a video about how the i9 is crap.

That's why I don't like these guys. because they make a living on Youtube meaning they have to jump the gun without even talking to Apple first or doing extensive testing in the name of video views and that further fuels all of the hate Apple customers get by Windows & android fanboys and so because of lazy vloggers like this, I now have to spend the next 2 weeks defending why I'm a Mac user to people who don't do their own research at work "hey your laptop is slower than you told me. bet you feel stupid now"

Dave Lee, MKB, Everthing Apple pro and others make being a Mac user harder for those of us who simply prefer the ecosystem and operating system Apple provides, not the stats, xxx-gates and other mis-steps of a company we've stuck with when times were bad.

As soon as Apple Product reviews stop getting clicks and ad-revenues, these guys will move on to the next thing. That's why I don't like these guys and don't give their reports any merit.

The same applies to MacRumors as well BTW. Arn started this site in 2002 with a goal to report on the rumor-mill. They're a mini-Engadget now doing product reviews, affiliate links and all of the news now is about iOS devices. I spend about 10 minutes a day using iOS and the rest of my time on a Mac. If my mac is slower than the PC counterparts, I don't care. I love my mac and the company. These guys aren't a threat to my existence, they're making my life difficult but putting up crap like this which in turn causes me to have to defend my lifestyle with other people. Every time people perceive apple as failing, it wastes my time. I want to just exist as a Mac user without having to defend it like I have been doing since arguing about drivers and video cards with PC users in 1999.

None of what you said is relevant to the issue at all. We’re discussing HARDWARE issue. Are you trying to argue it doesn’t exist?

because they make a living on Youtube meaning they have to jump the gun without even talking to Apple first

Talk to Apple first? Ya, I am sure they will respond right away regarding a potentially defective product. How long did it take them to address keyboard issues? At a minimum, reviewers willing to identify some potential downfalls of a product are doing a service to people looking to fork over a small fortune for said product.

Apple bears some responsibility in this—being such a tightly-integrated OEM that should have been aware of known issues—but if you've held even a peripheral interest in such matters this isn't something new in the world of CPUs. It's of little consolation to existing i9 owners (regardless of installed OS) but there will be patches/updates released (from the hardware vendors and Adobe) to mitigate this, although you can probably expect they won't come without a performance cost.

Unless you can prove he faked the test, your point is irrelevant.

He didn't fake it, but it's a single data point that relates to one application and doesn't provide a meaningful comparison. He could at least have compared the MBP i9 to a Dell XPS 15 i9 before claiming the design of the MBP chassis is the issue for example. He also could have compared the 2018 MBP i9 to a 2018 MPB i7 instead. Hell he could have compared the MBP i9 running Win 10 and Premiere to the Windows PC he used for a better comparison.

The test as is gives no useful information

Huh? He tested one app (unoptimized adobe premier) on one machine. That is not conclusive by any means, regardless of testing methods, so his point was completely relevant. You can't make sweeping conclusions based on results from one test on one machine. Would FDA approve a drug after testing it on one person?? If they did would you take it?

I'm glad the discussion is kicked off so more people will dig into it though.

I think its wise not to jump to conclusions. Yes, Dave2D's video is alarming, but in some ways not terribly surprising because other PC makers are struggling with thermal issues with the Coffee Lake chips. I'd say if someone has an order in queue, don't cancel, and once it arrives test it out. Apple gives us a two week return period, use that to fully vet the machine out.

I didn't realize it before but I actually very into Apple's ecosystem now. I am using Apple iMac 27'' 2015 model, 2015 MacBook Pro, iPhones, iPad Pro, earpods. I have a windows laptop also just for gaming. I really enjoy using Apple's Mac OS. But Apple keeps disappointing us in the past few years.

Got your point. But I don't think this response could help us figure out the issue we concerned. Nothing useful I can get from your comment... If you want to prove something here, please bought one and do the test to prove your point.

I’ve got an i9 on order and I had an online chat with Apple support earlier today and raised my concerns about the throttling Dave2D had highlighted. The chap was very helpful and they’re allowing me to return it within 30 days (rather than the usual 14) so I can put it through its paces once it arrives.
