Macbook Pro i5 Quad Core - Super Warm - Normal?

I own both dual-core touch bar model from 2016 and the quad-core one from 2018 and yes, the quad-core is running hotter. Will post some results

Note: room temperature is usually 25-27c here in Bangkok (air-conditioned)

2018 13 i7 here.

Mine usually sits around 36-42 using safari (including YouTube). No fans. If the ambient temps are warm or the computer is placed on a surface with poor ventilation like a blanket, then ya the temps get higher. My fans rarely run with light work though.

Edit: temps can sit around 28-30 as well.

Since the TDP on the i5 is about 10 Watt lower than on the i7, I suspect the i7 to be hotter and thus the fans having to kick in earlier. My Lenovo i7 stays silent except when compiling or 4K Video.

What happens with the MBP on 4K Video? Do the fans kick in?

I am particularily interested in comparison between i5 and i7. It's not about the money for me, but about the performance-to-noise ratio.

The 15% more speed of the i7 and the slightly higher clockage of the iGPU on the i7 make me wanting the i7. But if it gets too loud I'd rather take the i5 and compile a few seconds longer. Any thougths?

Imported a 4K 60fps video from my iPhone X. Imported as an original file; no compression. Full screen play back, max brightness with sound on. Ambient room temperature of 73 degrees Fahrenheit.

The video was played in Photos MacOS 10.14

I looped it for about 5 minutes. The temp stayed exactly at 43 and 44 degrees Celsius. Fans at 0 rpm the entire time, for both fans.

Yeah, I know historically i7's are supposed to run warmer but coming from a dual core i5 MacBook Pro, this thing definitely runs cooler. So I think advancements have either squashed the temp differential or the new i7's are cool enough to where it doesn't matter or both.

Which browser do you want me to check with? Safari doesn't support 4k.

I did run youtube with Safari in 10.14.1. Ambient temp 71 Fahrenheit
1080p @ 60 fps = temps pegged at 38 or 40 Celsius depending on the video. Both fans @ 0 RPM

Fox and Chrome both can do 4k. I guess I'm more interested in Fox, since its latest iteration is pretty darn impressive and lighter on resources than Chrome. Offtopic: - can you watch Netflix in 4k on a MacOS these days? MS has struck some money-making deal with Netflix where only they can decode DRMed 4k in MS Edge Browser. It really worked when I tested it.

With Firefox 63, 71 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temp, screen full brightness, ublock origin installed, MBP on a wood table. 4K 60 FPS.

The Mac CPU holds 76 Celsius and does a good job of it. With that temp the fans stabilize at 3400 and 3600 RPM. If the cpu temp goes higher for any reason (video loading or interacting with the OS), the fans spin up to around 4400 and 4600 RPM and bring the CPU temp back down to 76 no problem. Once the video is paused the temps come down immediately. I admit the ambient air is on the cool side, so with any adverse conditions I can see the temps being 10-15 degrees higher or higher fan speed.

CPU cores running at 25%-30% the entire time.
GPU cores running between 50%-66% entire time.
Memory not even sweating at a solid 14% usage. (16gb config)

I agree its quite frustrating that safari doesn't support 4k, along with their other products..
The playback on Firefox looked amazing.
No 4k playback in Netflix with any browser in macOS. That I know of..
