I need to use a Macbook Pro in target disk mode. It is the mid-2014, 15-inch model equipped with Thunderbolt 2 ports. The main machine to which I want to connect it is a 2019 iMac with USB-C ports. Now Apple says that if either of the computers has macOS 11 or more recent installed, then the connection must be done with a Thunderbolt cable.

I tried plain USB and it does not work, as expected. On the other hand, cables with male Thunderbolt 2 and USB-C connectors that I can find are unidirectional and serve only to send signal to a display. I there any solution to this problem?

Thanks!

You need a Thunderbolt 2 cable and a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter to bridge the two. I've used both of these to transfer data from 2017 MacBook Air's over to USB-C Macs.

It can be done, but it's about $80 worth of cables that you'll never use or need again. So decide if the capability is worth that cost.

I have always heard that Target Display Mode was something that certain iMacs supported and that MacBooks have never had this feature. Are you trying to use the MacBook Pro as a monitor or the iMac? iMacs dropped Target Display Mode after 2013 on the 27 inch models. You can use screen sharing or Airplay to Mac to use either system as a monitor for the other but both have to be running Monterey or Ventura.

The other option is Screen Sharing.

The OP said Target Disk mode, not Target Display Mode.
