I'm getting a 17'' MacBook Pro in the next few months. i am having an internal blu ray burner in it.

the 12mm standard slim drives will work, right?

and does anyone know of a slim blu ray burner that is SLOT loading? price dosen't matter.

IIRC, there are no internal blu ray drives that will fit in a MBP. Search around a bit--there are some threads that address this.

i heard that the MacBook Pro will support a 12mm drive... and i've seen like two blu ray burners that are that size. there all just tray loading. and it's a pain to find the dimensions of the superdrive.

i haven't ruled out replacement drives from other laptops either.

    here's a 9.5mm blu ray reader.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-UJ232A-9-5mm-Ultra-Slim-Blu-ray-Burner-Reader-/370477086804

i found a 12.7mm blu ray burner. but it's not fast enough. Panasonic UJ-235AS

i think this will be a possibility.

i'll post the parts i find and continue to update this thread for anyone interested.

    Ah, I stand corrected!

There's a fairly long thread - possibly in the Macrumors News Forums - with a title along the lines of "Jobs says not to expect Blu Ray drives in Macs" or something like that.

The ODD bay on a MacBook is 9.5mm.

Good luck with all this, you're gonna need it...

9.5mm should fit as long as you want to play any Blu-ray movies in Bootcamp under Windows since OS X does not natively play BR.

In all honesty, I don't think it's worth the time, money, or research. Unless you do a lot of work/entertainment with Blu-Ray (even then I would still think twice). There's no support on Apple's end, and it takes quite a bit of effort to get it working in OS X. Even if you do use Bootcamp, well, I wouldn't advise it.

If you do decide to go with it, by all means, good luck :D Hopefully it will work out for you.

I'm pretty sure it's 9.5mm for all the MBPs except the pre-unibody 17" which used a 12.7mm drive. That's just a general rule of thumb but I think it's pretty accurate.

Of course there's always google to find out more.

    Cheers,

so the 17'' needs to be 9.5mm too?

Panasonic UJ-242 is a 12.7mm slot loading blu ray burner.

the 17" is less than one mm thicker than the 13" and 15", so yes, it needs a 9.5mm also.

Replace SuperDrive laser assembly and board, with that of a blu ray burner?

    would that work at all?

would the donor drive have to be slot loading?

could the donor drive be 12.7mm?????

A 12.7mm donor drive will have 12.7mm parts. It won't fit into the SD case.

Just get an external BR burner like I did.

the 12.7mm donor drive could theoretically work, as long as the board isn't too tall, becasue the 9.5mm and 12.7 drive are the same length and width, so as long as the laser assembly isn't too tall, it SHOULD work.

    It "should" work?

It would be good to see this working, although it isn't going to. I would like to say I am wrong in this case.

I agree. You have a disc that needs to spin super fast. That means you need perfect balance - you can't just "duct tape" it. Plus, parts for a 12.7mm drive will be made larger in order to fit tightly in a 12.7mm case.

Nice. I'm not keen on this type of stuff, what software are you using to run the blu-ray drive?
