Nothing about a computer is an investment.

Tell that to all of these companies investing in tools(computers) for their employees

Every single one of your analogies has been horrible. Yes, dig a well before you need it. But don't install a $1000....

I'm talking about preventing a possible problem with the laptop. It's not a life altering decision to go with what is becoming the standard amount of ram in laptops these days.

4GB of RAM is still enough for a lot of people. 8GB is plenty for most. 16GB is needed for a few. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. If you don't think you'll need it in the next couple of years, it isn't worth spending money on right now.

If 4gb is enough then maybe a netbook would be a better option than to buy a MacBook? Would save a ton of money.

If a company needs to buy tools for their employees, they'll buy the tools that the employees need to do their job. This means they'll determine the specs needed and order accordingly. If 16GB isn't necessary, the company isn't going to buy it.

Most users won't ever NEED 16GB of RAM. I'm not sure what you're not comprehending here.

Netbooks now? Really?

I'm done with this conversation. You're obviously going to keep throwing out irrelevant comparisons to try to prove that everyone should have 16GB of RAM in case they might need it someday.

It'll take 16GB, which is great if you need it.

What do you use the computer for?

Have you ever checked your memory usage?

i use it for general web surfing,Netflix, college work and a bit of iMovie and photoshop nothing that major. just notice when using the likes if iMovie or Netflix it struggles a bit over long periods

What would you be doing on a mac to warrant 16gb of ram? it seems and awful lot

If you get heavier into video editing you'll want 16gb.

Getting back to an earlier point, put in a Samsung 850 evo (or similar) SSD before even spending money on more ram. The SSD upgrade with absolutely TRANSFORM your user experience. The ram upgrade will be more subtle, and only occasionally noticed.

Actually upgrading to 8gb of ram plus switching to an ssd drive will completely change your user experience.

Agreed. All I'm saying is the SSD will make a much bigger impact than the ram upgrade. Of course, if you can do both, that's the ideal scenario
