Whilst there is signs of some sort of liquid on the LCD flex cable, there does not appear to be any liquid on the actual connectors. As such this is no proof that the black screen is due to 'water damage'. Apple would need to prove that the part in question that has signs of liquid on it is actually damaged. I believe under consumer law that companies are not allowed to say 'oh water damage, you must pay xxx'. The company must for prove what they claim is the cause of the fault is actually the cause of the fault. The problem is that the macbook was purchased from a store in Australia therefore Australia consumer law applies here, not EU consumer law.

So now they are saying it's probably condensation and if thats the case still means we have to pay. Also the back light thing is probably totally separate and the guy says a factory defect but still have to pay.

Somebody with an M1 Mac mini had water issues too recently. I think that maybe because the fans hardly run at all on these things, it makes them susceptible to condensation?

OMG

I sent an email to Tim cook because I was so angry. I have just received an email from an Apple Executive in the UK so obviously he's got somebody to contact me which is pretty amazing. I have to call her, have tried but she's busy obviously. In the past when i had issues I found Apple's service to be outstanding. Hence the reason I never went back to using PC's.

That's not how that works. iPhones and iPads don't have fans and don't have condensation problems.

I hope Apple resolve this fast for you. I have a topic on this forums, with my MacBook Air purchase (not at Apple) and it took me 7/8 weeks to resolve.

hard and confusing time

Well I'm very impressed. It was because I sent a couple of emails to Tim Cook that an executive called me and is looking into it for me. I was always a pc man but since I switched to Apple in 2014 never wanted to buy anything else.

My old macbook from 2014 is still going strong and is so durable.

Perhaps the emails to Apple will help.

I would never put an Apple product "under AppleCare" into the hands of a 3rd-party (non-Apple) service provider if there was any way possible to take it to a real "Apple Store".

Even if that means traveling out of town.

I would reckon the scenarios you face will be either:
1. Apple sends you a prepaid shipping box. You send it to Apple, and they either fix it or replace it.
2. Apple asks you to take it to THEIR Apple Store ... in Amsterdam? It will be repaired there or replaced.
3. If neither of the above works out for you, then I'll say your best course of action is to pay the 250 Euros for a replacement.

I spoke to the Apple lady in the UK and she confirmed that my email to Tim Cook was read, which is quite amazing. Never expected that. Luckily I wrote nice things about Apple products and it wasn't an angry rant. Probably still gonna give me the whole water damage thing and to be honest I'm over it. I don't want to spend entire days on the phone arguing. It's not about the money, it's the principal that I bought a premium product and it died without really being used. I can't see how water got into it. It was placed high up beside my TV. The only thing i can think of is condensation which somebody from Apple even agreed but then they said I will still have to pay.

So Apple have been in touch and agreed no water was spilt on the laptop and we are getting a replacement at no cost. The executive from Apple was outstanding. She resolved the issue super quick It does look like some kind of issue involving moisture. Emailing Tim Cook really did the trick.

Then I am at a complete loss to how drink or detergent got in it. It's been kept in the box or kept right by my TV. I am extremely careful with my things to the point of being obsessive. I'm not being petty. I really don't see why I am being forced to pay 250 euro for a replacement brand new laptop when water or drink or anything liquid hasn't been near it.
You are not paying 250 for a new replacement, you are paying 250 for a refurb!

This proves my point - Apple doesn't care about QA and testing before mass producing. Thats why everything after 2015 is built like crap and it breaks.

It was a problem with moisture, not QA and Apple executives have provided the OP with a replacement.

oh remember 2009 and 2011 MacBooks that failed due to GPU dying.
pretty sure that was before 2015.

I don't think they'd be silly enough to pull that stunt with me, after the fuss I kicked up. Besides I can quite easily find out if the replacement they give me is refurbished.

Yes I remember that, but my 2011 never experienced the Radeon gate or bad GPU issue.. maybe I was lucky ?

Oh wow now the Apple care person is saying sounds like a condensation issue which is what I always thought. Now we are being passed to somebody else. Yipee. And have to repeat the whole story again. I'm thinking of sending Apple an invoice for the hours I've wasted on the phone.

Talk about hours wasted on the phone. I bought a MB Air in dec. I ordered on line and had it delivered to an Apple store near me. when I went to pick it up there was an adapter with it for $17 that I didn't want so they canceled that invoice and make up another one for just the MB. Then after 2 weeks I decided to return it, called and got a label and mailed it back. That's when the trouble started, canceling the invoice at the store looked like a refund to Apple and the have refused to give me my refund saying it has been refunded already. I have been calling both Apple and Goldman Sachs now for two months now trying to get someone to understand that I have no computer and no refund. I talked to a guy that was a in upper management in customer relation and he refused to listen to reason said that when he looked at the transactions I had gotten my refund. I tried to tell him what he saw in the cancelation of the very 1st invoice and then I got another one. Do I have to resort to legal action? I have been an Apple fan since the 1980s and always bragged about the service until this nightmare. does anyone have any idea what I can do next.

My advice - SUE them for their horrible service and send Tim Cook a letter. Seems Apple today under cook is falling apart in the area of service where they don’t give a damn about the consumer abs their problems - just buy new and forget about repair of the current machine - Apple is like a cash cow. Rossman was correct !

Apple is MUCH bigger than it was under Steve Jobs. If you think apple service is the worst, then please try Microsoft service and Samsungs. Everyone will have different experiences, some good some bad.

If you don't think a single person got bad service when Steve Jobs was in charge I got a bridge to sell you.

I am familiar with the complaints from G5 owners about LCS leaking and Apple denied it - sadly, this hurt Apple in a very big way.

Send a polite email to Tim Cook and I'm sure somebody senior will contact you.

That looks like water damage in a perfect circle, in the middle of the device. How would water manage to get into the middle of the device like that? That screams scam to me.
When I asked the repair people to send me the pictures I thought they looked very suspect. To neat, I looked at pictures of water damage on the web and they didnt look like the ones that were on my mac. The ones on my mac looked like smears. I even ran the photos through Metadata software for time, date, etc. To be honest it had got to the stage with the endless phonecalls and emails including ones to Australia having to explain the problem over and over again that I was just going to wash my hands with it all and just write it off. We have literally been dealing with this since January and I think the whole of monday was taken up on the bloody phone.
