I've been thinking of buying a laptop for work and for travel.
I'm currently a teacher and I love photography, so I want a computer that I can use to plan, grade, use photoshop, and edit videos using premiere pro.

At first I was thinking of the MacBook Air, but when I start upgrading the specs the price is close to the MacBook Pro.

I noticed that BH has some sales on laptops... Would you buy one with M1 Max over the M2 Pro? I have a Mac Mini with M2 Pro and I've been surprised! It's been good for basic tasks.

What laptop is a better value?

I would buy the M2 Pro unless the M1 is very cheap. About the same performance but it will be supported longer with software updates.

As things stand right now, ARM-based Macbooks have no Bootcamp/Windows/Linux way out, unlike the Intel ones. So once your ARM-based laptop is out of software updates, which isn't that long, it's not that good anymore.

if you are going to do a lot of video work, you might appreciate the extra hardware encoders included with the M2 Max which might be worth the $200 extra.

Asahi Linux runs on Apple Silicon. Some of the hardware features are not yet supported but you can definitely boot linux.

I'm aware of it but it's too experimental to recommend. As I said, "as things stand right now".

Buying the kind of laptop the OP wants is a big investment.
