I recently bought the 14” MacBook Pro with the M1 chip in the process of making a decision mac rumors announced the M2 Chip would be available in 2022. I asked the help desk and the sales department if I get a discounted price on the M1 I was ordering or could I get a guarantee for up grade at a reasonable price. I received a polite no comment because they said they did not have any info on the M2. I went ahead and completed the purchase even though the trade in value of my iMac had been reduced from $610 to $475 in a matter of hours. With no solution possible or the ability to reach a manager I went ahead with the purchase. If it is of any consideration I have been a user since 2009 and converted two large companies I worked for to using Mac. One was a Scitex user with a heavy investment but trusted my decision and sold off the Scitex system and converted to Mac. This was a printer/publisher that required 15 Macs to support production of its 450 magazines.

It's not guaranteed Apple will release the M2 in 2022. Apple may continue upgrading with the M1 Pro/Max series for the iMac, MacPro, MBA(?), and Mac Mini.

You should always buy for what you need now, and if Apple releases a major upgrade next year that better suits your needs, you can always sell or trade-in if you think the upgrade is worth it.

No one really knows what the schedule will be, but it's entirely possible that Apple would roll out the potential M2 or whatever the second gen chips are like they did the M1 with lower end chips coming out first and then the Pro and Max models showing up a little later. There are also rumors of a server/workstation class M1 that may yet come out.

I would imagine the M1 Pro will hold value quite well over the next year or so, and you can always sell on Swappa or Ebay or some other platform if Apple isn't giving you the value that you want. I just got rid of my 2019 16" MBP, and I can tell you that the loss on that was a little painful, but it seemed like to right move to jump to the M1 Pro now.

Realistically its a year away before the Pros are in your hands next year with a M2, assuming they even release that chip that cycle. One year is forever in electronics, there is always going to be something newer and better out in a year.

As for prior purchases, plenty of people have sunk a lot of cash in Apple products. What you purchased 12 years ago on behalf of a company you didn't own isn't relevantisn't nor would it be even if you owned the company.

Buy what is available now because that is what you can buy or wait for the future and buy then. I did just that with the iMac. I wasn't interested in the old intel silicon and wanted a 27 inch machine. So I'm waiting. I recently purchased a 16 inch MBP specifically because of the new Apple silicon and the stellar reviews. The fact that the upgraded chip is coming doesn't mean anything to me because the m1 is already way more than I'll use on a regular basis.

Buy or wait, that is your decision.

Wait... this is a thing?! or is your use case from a business/enterprise account?

I figure it'd be a hard sell if not impossible, especially since the 14" just was released less than 2 months ago...

YOU know they had just released an iteration of the MacBook Pros, and yet you're asking about rumors and non-official releases ? And asked for a discount no less, what if you were in their shoes what other answer would there be?

WHAT is wrong with using an 'M1' equipped Mac in 2022, 2023, and beyond? They will still function last I checked and you can purchase a 2 year warranty straight from Apple...

Expecting Apple to Osborne itself over its future plans, and asking for / expecting discounts on a machine that’s currently backordered due to high demand won’t ever happen.

If Apple does release MacBooks with M2 in the first half of 2022 it will almost certainly be entry level chips and your 14" MacBook Pro will likely still outperform them in many ways with its higher performance M1-series chip. I don't think you ought worry.

Plus, the Pro models will likely retain the superior displays, speakers, and possibly the 1080p webcam...

with your order of 15 Macs back in the days, I really wonder why they didn't give you 1st level manager service and backstage access to order the unreleased M2
