Thanks ya'll

the "Bracket Top Case Front Cables" is the ribbon cable that runs from the logic board to the hdd and it also branches off and incorporates the IR sensor/ Sleep LED bracket.

That ribbon is kinda a known faulty part, a lot of late 2011 and mid 2012 macbook pros come in for hard drive related issues and its actually that cable that causes it. the Hdds are fine but the ribbon causes the drive to disappear or read errors.

Thanks Lucas!

Ogremoustro? What did they replace on yours?

Apparently they've charged me too much, since it's back down.
Going back to the Apple store tomorrow.

The 2011 models with AMD GPUs have a manufacturing defect that is present in all of the logic boards(including the replacements). I'd bring that up.

Not unknown. The replacement logic boards fitted to my MBP lasted three weeks and two weeks respectively.

Just keep taking it back, and they will hopefully replace the Mac.

If you don't mind me asking what do you think caused your computer to break again? Where you playing games? Watching videos? Rendering?

NP. The first time it flaked out I was just couch potatoeing, watching tv, and messing around on FB (involved playing one of their games).

I got it to boot a few times, took it to a repair shop (suggested to take it to Apple), got it to boot a few more times, copied everything, and then had it running for a few days. It died while trying to work in Adobe Indesign. CS 5.5. Tried to recreate the problem by launching iphoto, imovie, photo booth, Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop all at the same time, no problem. It died the next day messing around on the internet, just reading and looking up stuff.

Got it back from Apple three days ago. Have been busy and have only used it to play around on the internet, again. When I came home last night I had left it on, unplugged. The battery was only around 25%, I checked my emails and went on FB. I noticed it kept pinwheeling between tasks and shut it down. Woke up this morning, charged it up for about 30 minutes and it hasn't started up since. Brings up the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinner and then flashes to a black screen, back to solid grey and that's it.

I have tried starting with it plugged in and unplugged, reset the PRAM too.

The original Genius I talked to at the Apple Store said my hard drive tested fine but when he went to run an in-depth test it was freezing or failing at the video card and said he thought that was the only thing wrong with it. They only replaced the logic board and the cable.

I am just really agitated that they said they make the repair and then thoroughly test everything else.

Sorry to hear that. I got mine back on wednesday and its been fine. I've played a bunch of games on it and even ran some graphics stress tests and it's still working fine, for now at least. Just take it back to the Apple store and keep taking it back everytime it breaks and they might give you a new computer.

Additionally my laptop has been running pretty hot even when I'm just browsing on chrome. I don't expect it to last much longer.

I did notice that the fan is not running as much since I got it back. Even when playing the FB game it's not running full speed, all out like it was.

Most likely due to a better application of the thermal paste between the CPU/GPU and the cooling system.

I wasn't unknown for the manufacturing partners to be over-generous with the application at the factory which would make the chips to run a few degrees warmer.

I kept checking it once I noticed the fan wasn't running as much and it's not as hot as it used to be.

We'll see what they say tomorrow.

Good luck!

Do either of you know if opening my macbook pro voids the three month warranty that I received for replacing the logic board?

Went ahead and took it apart. This is what I found. Not as much thermal paste as in other logic boards that I've seen but still seems like a bit too much for a GPU chip of its size.
