Hello everyone,
I’ve been struggling with my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 for some time. I had been able to “bandaid” the issue of my MacBook with a handy program called GFX Card Status, allowing me to only run on the Intergrated Grafics. I would always get into some trouble here and there with it randomly switching back to the discrete graphics card and then in a few seconds the dreaded reboot would occur. I’m not sure if this is on the forum, but I would love to share this program that I stumbled across yesterday. I found it on ifixit.com, and the credit goes to a genius (as far as I’m concerned) Julian Poidevin for supplying this kernel patch free for all to use. It has so far worked for me for a day, which is much better than I had before. I was unable to run on discrete card for more than a minute or so. I would actually have to scramble to start up GFx card status upon reboot, because if I didn’t get it on ASAP my MacBook would crash again. You simply need to run this program to patch a kernel (I’m not very good with computers so I can’t exactly explain it). And viola your gpu/grafics card problem should go away. It may not work for everyone because as far as my research goes this issue can also be linked back to a failed capacitor, but it’s certainly worth a shot and even has an option to restore the kernel patch, if you want to get rid of it. You just need to make sure you disable your MacBooks SIP, clicking inside the program will actually bring up a YouTube video on how to do it even. If your having trouble doing it there is some more information in the comments section btw. Then run the patch and never look back. I don’t know if this program/post is on Mac Rumors already, or if it even belongs here, but I struggled for so long with this issue and I know Mac rumors is always one of the top google searches I come up with when researching this issue, so I feel like this may be the best place to share this information. Mods, please relocate this post if it’s not in the correct forum, please for the sake of all 2010 MacBook Pro owners, don’t simply delete this. Here is the link for the download, it works, I understand it may not solve everyone’s restarting problems, but from the comments I feel it has solved a large chunk of them. If this doesn’t fix your problem there is some information on a bad capacitor that will likely be your issue, just need to google that. As promised here’s the link:

Ah I see, pretty hard to find this program in that thread though. It would be nice if there was a sticky chalk full of keywords with only this program link and the capacitor fix. As The post with Julian’s program in doesn’t seem to be strait forward, and people after the post are still asking about GFx status, I’m certainly not oblivious to computer repairs and forum research but that post is super old and I’ve never found it before until you linked it and even then I may be lead to believe that the post is just a suggestion to use GFx card status. But ya, I feel like there are way too many people with this issue all over the Internet, would be nice to have a short post including all three options without the mess of like 1000 replies like some of those posts. Sorry if I’m being annoying, I’m just so pumped about the fact that my computer is essentially fixed (with slightly reduced grafics mind you), I literally want to shout about this fix on the roof of a tall building lol.
[doublepost=1535033408][/doublepost]Hmmm... ok so the second thread is straight up Julian’s program... this blows my mind how I was unable to find this before...

Different searches can provide lots of different and confusing results.

I used the patch when I purchased a used model off Kijiji one year ago for $80. I used the software patch until I had the capacitor replaced by a local repair shop for $75.

Hi Spencer

I know your post is now 2 years old but i have had the same issue with my MCB pro and used the same GFX card status app first and then the program cooked up by Julian P. Both of them worked on my MCB but coud you please let me know what did you do with the GFX card status app once you had downloaded Julian's program? Did you leave that app as is or did you just delete it once you ran the Julian program and the SIP was disabled. I sstill have the GFX app which keeps on switching to and from n to I but thankfully it doesn't crash my MCB. Your views are appreciated. cheers.
