Had my MacBook since 2014 and it’s served me well. How much of an upgrade is an M1?

I use it for surfing, watching some YouTube and will like to use it for editing 4k in future.

I went from a late 2013 MBP 15" 16/512 750m to a base MBA M1. Huge upgrade in everything but screen size.

The difference in processing power is ENORMOUS. I'm in a similar situation and use a 2015 15inch MBP. It's a huge jump in all aspects (specifically for the 4k editing capabilities). As far as day to day tasks, i'm not sure you'll notice much of anything unless you have a ridiculous amount of tabs open in a browser.

The only reason I've held off is because they haven't updated the 16 inch model with the new processors. The rumors of a 14 inch being made has also been appealing. Have they included the 16 inch model with the m1 update, I may have already bit the bullet.

I have a 12 inch MacBook 2017 and curious about the same thing. How much of a jump would it be?

Insane. Just look at GeekBench 5 scores. About 850 to 1,700 single-core and about 3,500 to 7,500 multi-core. Battery life is nuts too. I have a 2014 MacBook Pro and daughter has an M1 Air. Planning on an M1X MacBook Pro. The thing that I am looking forward to the most as not having a hot laptop on my lap.

I thought I was "upgrading" from my 16GB M1 MacBook Air to my 16" i7 MBP but, man oh man, was I wrong! Sure, in massive CPU intensive crunching, the difference isn't huge between these two but in day-to-day responsiveness, app-opening snappiness, resume-from-sleep, etc, the M1 crushes even my new 16" MBP. I don't need the multi-core power or the GPU boost this 16" MBP allows me but I just needed a slightly bigger screen for when I am working on the go. I wish they made a 16" MBA...

It will be a HUGE difference upgrading to a M1 Air over that Pro model, much less the "next tier up," which only includes the touchbar and fans. Unless you're constantly demanding max performance, and you likely aren't, then get an Air.

For day to day use of youtube and web browsing, it will not be a huge difference. It will be a little snappier but that is all. For anything that needs computing/graphics power --- like 4 K editing -- you will notice a very large difference.
