*pop* then silence

I’m on a MBP, running 10.5.6 (2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo)

While perusing the web with Firefox and Twitterdeck open, there was a sudden *pop* from the back of my laptop (think: if this was a PowerBook G4 and the back flip down door suddenly snapped shut). After that, silence. Nothing.

My volume slider on the menu bar works...System Pref’s show internal speakers set correctly with the volume at about 60%...volume up and volume down function keys work correctly (well, visually anyway). When I toggle the mute function key, however, the pop sound accompanies it. Reminds me of pulling headphone plugs out of my old stereo jack in the ‘70s.

Otherwise, everything looks fine on the surface. Just can’t get a single sound out of any app, period.

Thoughts?

Follow up

So I did a restart....

While shutting down, the *pop* sound occurred again. Loud.

After restart, the chime happened (whew)...the first couple of minutes after logging in, about 2/3 of the expected sounds occurred (testing everything I could think of that triggered sound)...then, after five minutes, all sound appears to be fine.

This is so bizarre. And nerve-wracking.

I have 2 year old Macbook Pro and all of a sudden I have no sound from speakers, no sound from headphone jack and iTunes doesn't even play. So I start searching about what the problem is, thinking that I am probably going to have to go see a tech. A couple of posts here said "Restart". Works great now! Thanks to everyone that contributes to making this site so useful.:)

Works Please look for the RED light

I sent my MBP in to APPLE depot it came back with the video issue fixed but the sound did not play, I did not notice right away because I did hear sound through the internal speakers on boot, I also noticed a RED light emitting from the headphone jack, after reading the forums i decided to tickle the opening as suggested after about 5 minutes (and I was about to give up) it worked. I did not spray WD40 in the hole . Also note if I used headphones in the jack they did play sound, but my internal speakers sound better .

I'm having the same problem :( Just yesterday i was using my computer jut fine and now, the sound is locked. when i try to change the sound level, it won't let me :(
I read on yahoo answers that its because it won't recognize the fact that headphones are no longer connected. As it were i conneccted headphones and it works fine....any one who can help me figure out why this is happening? :(

Thanks!

I just had the same problem right now and I had the same solution too! I wanna know why too, all support from apple didn't help at all.

Nuke and Repave NOT REQUIRED

backup and do a clean install of OS X.

I found by reapplying the 10.5.6 combo updater (available from support.apple.com) fixed the problem on my machine.

FYI, repair permissions and running utilities such as applejack did not fix the problem. I'm guessing some pref file became corrupt that is not checked by applejack.

Hope this helps others with the same issue.

Me too

Same problem here...no sound all of a sudden. MacBook Pro is 2 years old. This is the first time. I have been using external speakers and plug into the headphone jack. After reading here, I plugged a set of I Touch ear buds into the jack and I can get sound and the sound buttons work. If I remove the earbuds and touch the sound buttons I get nothing and the screen shows the volume bar as I push the button but there is a circle with a slash thru it underneath the bar indicating I no can do! I plug the earbuds in again and voila sound. I "tickled" it as I read here, but the volume just won't work when I pull the earbuds out! Since so many of us are experiencing the problem, I'll bet Apple has the answer....I think I still have a little warranty left. Think I'll give it a whirl. Anyone else come up with any more ideas before I inconvenience myself?

MBP 2.16 No Audio, Red Light from Output

I woke up with the same problem after falling asleep with Front Row playing iTunes. Closed my MBP to take it to my desk with speaker cable plugged in (then unplugged when closed) and when reopened at my desk there was a red light and no sound. Tried the paperclip trick, rubbed it in a circular motion along the inside of the output and the light went off. I now have audio through apps yet not from notices like volume adjustment, baffling.

Hey Folks. Just to confirm observations. I had my iPhone headset plugged in before I shut the lid on the MBP. I then unplugged the headset while it was closed. I then opened it and no sound. A restart didn't fix the no sound problem. When I checked for a red light...nothing. But when I plugged in the headset i could get volume. So I muted it, unplugged the headset and then put up the volume. Apple needs to fix this.

LEGEND! thanks heaps - this helped!

Fixed this problem... for now.

Had the same issue. Digital output setting... only headset would work... had the red light on my headphone jack. Ran the PRAM reset (reboot with command, option R P) didn't help right away. Saw the idea about the paperclip. Not something I would do (would't stick a pencil in my ear either) but it gave me the idea to plug and unplug by headphones several times. Well it worked. Great forum. Thanks everyone.
