Question:
"MacBook Pro non-touch for college? enough?"

I used spiral-bound notebooks and a pen for college.
That was "enough"... ;)

Having said that, yes, the non-touchbar MacBook should be MORE THAN enough.

128gb SSD will do. Just be careful about what you put on it.

If you need to store movies and other large files, pick up an external USB drive (either HDD or SSD).

that is my plan, but with refurb. is it okay?
I have a refurbished 2017 MBP w/Touchbar and it has no issues (aside from one software bug, which should go away with the next update).

As everyone else said, get a model with 256 GB, you will be surprised how fast you can eat through 128 GB. If you can find a refurbished one on the Apple online store, I'd grab it up. Refurbs actually often are looked over with more fine tooth comb than brand new ones.

Mine is an 8GB RAM, and even with my photo editing it is plenty.

Congrats on your new MacBook Pro! You’ll be pleased with it, and it will be perfectly fine for your needs!

Hello, just joined:)

So I am planning to buy MacBook Pro non touch bar for college (I literally do not have the money to go to touch bar model, windows alternative is not possible; 'not recommended'), with the dual-core i5, 128 gb of ram, and 8 gb of memory, and my parents allow me to add $200 to the price, so I can upgrade only one of those. I think I can do with the i5, but I am quite worried about the ram and ssd.

So, with my limited budget, should I upgrade ram or ssd? or even the processor? I'll use this for the next 5 years (I will suffer).

I download powerpoints, use pages and keynote, 4-7 tabs while safari browsing, and watch youtube and netflix. Nothing else.

thanks in advance.

You laptop is MORE than capable of doing what you need at school. Just enjoy!

Why?
You already stated your usages are rather light, I have an 2015 iMac with only 8GB. I run Lightroom, photoshop, windows, and other apps without it battling an eyelash. You want to save money then don't upgrade that you don't need. Many folks here have already stated 8GB is perfectly fine for running what you had. macOS' memory management is the best and you'll not be having issues.

Not true IMO. MacOS is great with RAM. I used my 2012 rMBP with 8gb in college for over 4 years and never had an issue. SSD, yes. He/she needs 256gb.
Agreed, 8GB is more then enough for now and the future. Storage, anything below 256 is going to be a mistake

Well, if you *have* to run keynote and pages, perhaps not. But if you are using MS PowerPoint already, why not MS Word rather than Pages? A Windows alternative will run that as well if not better and no issues with Youtube and Neflix.

the whole campus including teachers and faculty all use Macs. if not, I would already be owning a ThinkPad for a long time by now.[/QUOTE]

about the ram, I am pretty sure 8 is enough, but some people are telling me to go 16, which is worrying me. my life and job depends on this, so a mistake on the laptop I buy would be regretful. thanks for the reassurance though, finally bought my computer and I couldn't be happier! (i lied, if the campus allowed me to use a ThinkPad, my life would be complete.)

Debby downer here.

There is a rumor of a 13" $1200 MacBook coming in September. It wouldn't surprise me if its a 2018 nTB with 8th gen processor(s) and the 3rd gen buttyfly keyboard. Keep an eye on your return window - would be a shame to spend that money and have Apple drop a better one within weeks.

Too bad. School starts in a week. bought it already, so THE END IS NEAR. Is it a good idea to sell it within months? the buyer would think I tortured the machine or something...
