Release date:

January 6, 2009
June 8, 2009
April 13, 2010

On October 14, 2008, at a notebook-oriented event at Apple's headquarters, a new 15-inch MacBook Pro was announced featuring an aluminum unibody construction and tapered sides similar to those of the MacBook Air.

At the MacWorld Expo keynote on January 6, 2009, Phil Schiller announced a 17-inch MacBook Pro with unibody construction. This version diverged from its 15-inch sibling with an anti-glare "matte" screen option and a non user-removable lithium polymer battery.

At Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8, 2009, it was announced that the 13-inch unibody MacBook would be upgraded and re-branded as a MacBook Pro, leaving only the white polycarbonate MacBook in the MacBook line.

On April 13, 2010, the MacBook Pro saw another update. Intel Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs were introduced in the 15- and 17-inch models, while the 13-inch retained the Core 2 Duo with a speed increase.

Next update?

MacBook air took more then 12 months way longer then it's other previous update cycles.

Update can range from now till anything before the iPhone 5 updates.

Will it be updated before the iPad 2 or after?

iPad 2 to be updated most likely March/April 2011.

March

I reckon in march...before the iPad 2 update, otherwise if iPad was released first more people will go for the iPad get used to it and not bother getting the mbp.

iPad is already hurting the pc sales and may effect mbp sales.

March I reckon but could be any other given month knowing apple and their surprises, they do ..do the unexpected sometimes.

it will not be updated. mbp is end of life product. it will be replaced with 15" and 17" macbook air. probably still with core 2 duo.

Yep, nothing beats an MBA with a 20" screen.
