Is the popping sound that really loud sound around the 1:41 mark of the video? If so, I'd be pissed over that too and demanding an exchange.

Also, was the MacBook Pro new when you bought it? Claiming 80% of them have this problem is a little ridiculous but I've seen its not an isolated incident.

if you want trolling do it elsewhere, people have a real problem with this machine

I don’t doubt some do, I also had a real issue with the keyboard. But I don’t find a popping sound that happens from time to time when you move the lid such a “real problem”. If you do, however, take it into service and get it replaced.

The first refurb 2016 nTB MBP we bought had this popping noise when pressing the keys. Seemed to only happen when it got hot. Went into Apple Store and they denied knowing about it. They gave me the most confused look when I told them about it...good acting on Apple's part. Ended up refunding the computer and just buying a 2017 model. I've never heard of any solution to this problem since.

Just to make sure, you are saying that Apple knew about the issue and then sent a memo to every of their employees in every store they own to tell them to give a confused look to clients coming in with this issue? Maybe Apple sent them to acting school too?

Don't you think it's possible those particular employees never saw this issue before?

2015 era pros make the sound as well, though seemingly nowhere near as loud as I’ve heard the touchbar models do it. I guess it’s linked to the computer chassis heating and cooling so it’s always going to be there with any unit, but I don’t think I’d be happy with some of the most egregious cases...

Got a new 2018 MacBook Pro and I'm experiencing this clicking, and it's very annoying.

I'm still within the initial 14 day window where I can return mine, I'm just wondering whether to bother, considering that people who are having their units replaced are also experiencing the issue with the replacement. Maybe it's not worth bothering to return it and *maybe* get one that doesn't do it, but maybe get one that's exactly the same.

Does it / can it get better with time?

Return it your paying premium for a reason, accepting substandard build quality isn't one of them...

I've taken my MacBook Pro 15" 2016 in three times to Apple. Each time they sent it away and did massive replacements to components. Each time it came back and it didn't pop after. But, give it three months and its back to popping. On the third time an Apple Genius said there wasn't anymore that could be done with my laptop. He claimed that the popping noise was normal. It comes from springs inside the laptop overheating. If that is the case, what a bad design. I asked him why there are SO many people experiencing this problem and he is the only person now telling me about this and he said its not a widespread issue. I'm trying to think what to do next with it, to sell it or keep it? On eBay my laptop goes for less than $1000. If I sell it, what do I replace it with?

Well,
I have bought my late 2016 MacBook Pro which was the first MacBook Pro to do the popping cracking sound from the back of the screen, and since that time and I was trying to get rid of the sound, searching for a solution and never had found one!
Anyway, yesterday the sound made me really nervous while I am doing some stuff. Went down and unscrewed the back of the MBP trying to find a solution without any success, until I got a spray lube which I put some on a cotton swab and wiped the hinge spacing, and the bottom of the display that connects with the black plastic underneath, it really differed on the same time of the wiping,
This is the third date since and I can say the problem have been solved, but should be done carefully at your own risk!!

I had the display of my 2016 15” replaced by Apple free of charge. As Jad Ashi pointed out the sound seemed to be coming from the hinges.

Yes. While I had my keyboard serviced (MBP 2016, second keyboard replacement), I mentioned how the hinge was popping and they adjusted it a bit. Now it pops less (but still does, when the MBP gets really warm - not so loud, though). Sadly, I didn't get a full screen replacement, but I can live with this.

Thanks for this Jad. Today I was annoyed by the popping sound as well on my MBP 2018 late 15'' and I was trying to trace the sound. Sound definitely seems to originate in the lower part of the screen (i.e. the hinges). Did you encounter the problem still weeks after lubrication? I will report back here whether it solved the problem for me. I just want to note that the hinges of my old MBP 2013 became stiff and faulty after months of use too. Lubrication made a world of difference. Also.. I read that the screws tightening the hinges might be part of the culprit too. Update soon. - J

EDIT:
I am very happy to announce that the method worked. I loosened the screws of the hinges of the display. On the left and the right side the hinges are tightened with 3 screws, and for my case, the bottom one was >extremely< tight. I had to use pliers and a torque (T5?) screwdriver to loosen the screw. Subsequently I lubricated the screws and hinges with heat resistant motor oil so that on thermal expansion of the material, sounds of the expansion would fade. It is fairly logical that the sound came from the hinges, since the heat exits through the ports that pass these hinges. The slightest form of termal expansion simply makes a sound at this part. I haven't encountered the sound since. I am currently working on the macbook and normally I would hear the sound once or twice when the machine heated on startup.

So in short: Lubricate these hinges and loosen the screws of the hinges since Apple apparently tends to tighten them as much as possible, which is not always ideal !

Also.. it is quite hilarious that Apple replaced all parts in a machine without checking the actual part that conducts all the heat from the machine. And they call themselves a 'genius' bar. Just a general note: I remember I once brought my macbook to the 'genius' bar and they couldn't even replace a simple space bar key properly. It was since then that I started to think for myself in these cases. Well, good luck with tackling this problem everyone, hope this post will help some ! (And thanks Jad, again!)
