My MacBook Pro power adapter LED goes off sometimes. Leopard says it's "charged" and plugged in. On my MacBook (non-pro) the LED stays green when it's charged. Is this normal?

Mine doesn't - my new MBP charger stays green at all times, even when fully charged.

So I'd say it's not normal.

I've been keeping an eye on mine and it's been charged for the last couple of hours and I still have a green LED.

    What about everyone else?

your adapter should either be amber (when charging) or green (when charged) it should not go out! If it does make sure that it is "set" right into the power port on the computer and if it is I would give a call into Apple...sounds like you may need a new adapter!

I had the same issue... The wire coming out of the power brick was starting to fray. I brought it back to the apple store and they said that this was common for the first few gen of the MB and MBP mag-safe power adapter. They redesigned the jacket at this junction and made it longer to keep from this common problem from happening. I would make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them check it out.

the LED is supposed to be amber when charging and green when fully charged it's not suppose to show anything else but those two colors. If it shows nothing and is plug into both the computer and the outlet there may be a problem with it and you should see if you can get apple to replace it.

    Same problem

I have the same exact problem. I brought it into the apple store and told them about my problem. My MBP is about 2 months out of warranty and they said they doubt it is a problem with the adapter, and to make another appointment with my laptop on hand. My local genius bar is worthless. Any suggestions?

    They doubt its the adapter?

Im on my 3rd one, and it has been fine for 6months, not once has it done it.

Its an adapter issue, 100% sure. My MBP went through 2 in the first few weeks. The logic board, and computer for that matter has NEVER been looked at by apple, yet the problem, she is gone.

its amazing what a genius will say once they hear "out of warranty" laptop.

They don't even need to hear out of warranty. They only have to glance at an in warranty unit to declare the the sweat smudge on the palm rest is "water damage" and repairs are not covered.

I have the same issue on my power adapter I just thought it was an isolated issue, the adapter basically lights on when it wants to, right now it's unlit, it seems to charge correctly but the light doesn't turn on, even after unplugging and re-plugging it again. So yes, time to call apple.

    Same issue

But mine is somewhat intermittent. I believe it is the original adapter, but I'm not completely sure (I bought a spare also). The second one operates normally -- the green/orange light never remains lit at all times.

For me, when I detach and re-attach the mag power adapter at the computer, the light returns!

After a little while, I look over at the light, and it's off again.
Of course, as I'm writing this, it is staying on.

    Strange.

Also, the computer continues to indicate that it is currently plugged in, and at 100% charge.

The little light on my MBP power adapters has always gone off at some point or other.

    It's not a problem.

I've actually had two chargers, the old and new MBP chargers, and they both do it - so it can't be out of the question that it's an issue with the MBP rather than the charger.

I have noticed something similar with my original power supply for my mid '07 MBP. The green light will occasionally dim or go out completely. I can't replicate by shaking the wire from the P/S, it simply does it on its own. I bought a new P/S and the problem is gone. I assume that the problem lies with the old P/S. On a side note the new power supply has been redesigned and is much smaller.

I´ve got the same problem with my MBP. The LED goes off now and then. But it happens only when it´s fully charged. And then occasionally - it wakes up from the sleep-mode, too. Even though the top cover is closed.

I used another P/S - nothing changed. I changed the battery with no success. I deleted/resetted the PR-RAM and PMU. It´s still all the same.

I don´t know how to replicate this pattern of defects for repair - because sometimes it´s without defect for several days.
Does anybody know what I could possibly do or how to replicate the defect on purpose?

Clean the MagSafe connector on the computer with the graphite end of a pencil, and then clean the MagSafe connector on the adapter with an eraser. It's simply getting dirty. I've had this issue many times, and find cleaning it once a month will keep it from messing up.

I have this problem as well. It happens when it's fully charged and I have to unplug it and plug it back in to have the LED show green.

i have the same problem, with the newer type adapter. my old one didn't do it, but it did fall apart, so i guess we're even. if you google you'll see it's a known issue, and some people have had multiple things replaced and still had an issue. it still works fine tho, led on or off.

    Thanx for your answers.

    @ ryannazaretian
I cleaned it the way you said. Do you think using some IPA would help, too, if the MBP is disconnected and switched off, of course?

    @ bb714
Yes, that helps. But only for a short periode of time. Then is goes off again...always the same procedure.

    @ f1sh3r
I wouldn´t mind - if the MBP wouldn´t try to wake up. But the display tries to ..hm...display and the DVD-ROM makes some noise. Thus far the normal wake-up-procedure, even as if the top-cover would be opened and it would wake up. But because it is shut, this issue repeats again and again and stops only when opening the top-cover.

You can try some IPA like on a Q-tip and clean the ports, that definitely shouldn't hurt. Let it dry before you plug it in because a spark may end in catastrophe, plus I'm not sure of the conductivity of IPA. I had this problem on my old MBP and called Apple, they said they would not replace the adapter for this problem because it's cosmetic. The LED is just an indicator and it not showing something won't hurt anything, but it is annoying. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Definitely don't break anything.
